Introduction
The State of Connecticut, Department of Transportation District 1 is hiring for a Transportation Maintenance Crew Leader (Highway Maintenance) throughout the District 1 area:
Bolton, East Hartford, East Windsor, Farmington, Glastonbury, Meriden, Middletown, Southington, Vernon, Wethersfield, Willington and Windsor.

The Transportation Maintenance Crew Leader (Highway Maintenance) is a frontline working lead responsible for directing highway maintenance crews in daily operations and emergency response. Responsibilities include snow and ice control, storm cleanup, paving, drainage, and roadside maintenance. The role ensures safe, efficient service delivery across multiple municipalities while maintaining compliance with safety and operational standards, thus sustaining public mobility and infrastructure reliability.
RequirementsIncumbents must possess and maintain a current CDL Class A or B with tank endorsement and a valid Medical Examiner’s Card (MEC). Candidates must be willing to accept assignment to emergency duties, including mandatory winter overtime from November 1 through April 30, and may be required to remain at work for the duration of a storm event, sometimes several days, including holidays and weekends.
Applicants invited to interview must bring a completed Employment of Relatives Form, an Acknowledgement of Ethics Receipt, a valid CDL Class A or B with tank endorsement, and a valid Medical Examiner’s Card (MEC).
Examples of Duties- Plan crew workflow and determine priorities
- Schedule, assign, oversee, and review work
- Establish and maintain crew procedures
- Provide staff training and assistance; conduct or assist in performance evaluations
- Act as liaison with operating units, agencies, and outside officials regarding unit policies and procedures
- Requisition materials and equipment appropriate to the various jobs
- Participate in performing the duties of the crew
- Make recommendations on policies or standards
- Prepare reports and correspondence
- Do preliminary site inspection of assigned jobs
- Be ready to stand by for and respond to fire and/or crash emergency situations at State-owned airports
- Perform related duties as required
Knowledge of materials, equipment, and approved methods of surface treatment, surface and shoulder betterments, concrete work, guide rail construction, drainage construction and maintenance; approved methods of filling joints, patching, snow removal and sanding ice, and erosion control.
Skills:
interpersonal skills; oral and written communication skills; ability to make minor bridge repairs; utilize computer software; supervisory ability.
Two (2) years of skilled experience in the maintenance and repair of highways. For state employees, this experience is interpreted at the level of a Transportation Maintainer 2.
Preferred Qualifications- Experience as a lead or secondary inspector for VIP projects or other vendor-in-place projects, including the ability to interpret maintenance contracts
- Experience in an acting capacity as a Transportation Maintenance Crew Leader
- Experience serving as an acting crew leader, leading an echelon and overseeing the scheduling and management of snow operations
- Experience with setting up sign patterns on primary highways as an acting crew leader
- Experience as an acting crew leader on crash unit operations
- Experience and knowledge of department policies and procedures
- Experience in state and Microsoft computer applications (Microsoft Outlook, Excel, PowerPoint, and SharePoint)
Incumbents may be required by the appointing authority to possess and retain appropriate current licenses, permits and/or certifications.
Physical RequirementsIncumbents must have adequate physical strength, stamina, agility, visual and auditory acuity, and must maintain such physical fitness as to be able to perform the duties. A physical examination may be required.
Working ConditionsIncumbents are exposed to extremes of weather conditions, frequent lifting of heavy weights, highly dangerous road and traffic conditions, exposure to heights when working on bridges, to poison ivy, insect bites and allergy irritants during summer months, and to loud and potentially dangerous machinery. The appointing authority may require completion of an asbestos removal program consistent with EPA guidelines for operations and maintenance during employment in this class.
Incumbents may be required to use protective equipment such as respirators and safety goggles.
