Location: Bolton

The Connecticut Department of Transportation is hiring CDL Drivers for our District 1 locations. 2) positions in District 1.

Position Highlights
  • Monday – Friday.
  • On‑site work environment.
  • Full Time, 40 hours per week.
  • First Shift, 7:30 AM – 4:00 PM.
  • Locations:
    Bolton, East Hartford, East Windsor, Farmington, Glastonbury, Hartford, Meriden, Middletown, Southington, Vernon, Willington, Wethersfield, Windsor.
  • Must live within 30 miles of the garage location listed.
Position Requirements
  • Must possess a valid Commercial Driver’s License (CDL) Class A or B with tank (N or X) endorsement and no airbrakes restriction. The tank endorsement is required at the time of hire.
  • Must also hold a valid Medical Examiner’s Card (MEC).
  • Applicants must list license number, class, expiration date, and issuing state in the “Licenses and Professional Certifications” section of the application.
  • Bridge positions require additional OSHA  requirements:
  • Medically cleared for a respirator.
  • No facial hair.
  • Meet equipment weight requirement.
  • Night work required.
  • Qualified military members and recently honorably discharged veterans with at least two years of commercial motor vehicle operation may qualify based on the CDL Skills Test Exemption for Military Applicants.
Responsibilities
  • Perform construction, maintenance, and repair of state roadways, bridges, airports, and other departmental facilities.
  • Operate and maintain complex mechanical equipment; work as a moderately skilled mechanic in garages.
  • Maintain small and less complex mechanical equipment or assist with larger equipment.
  • Accept emergency duties, including snow and ice removal, during the winter season (mandatory overtime from November 1 through April 30). Employees may be required to remain on duty for the duration of storm events, including holidays and weekends.
  • Produce required documents (CDL, MEC, CTDOT-CDL-1 form) upon invitation for interview.
Examples of Duties Truck Types
  • Three to nine ton trucks, dump, platform or refuse trucks, with or without winch.
  • All of the above when using attachments such as snow plows, duo dump trucks, crash attenuators, trailers and towed equipment (except tilt‑bed trailers), pickup trucks (two‑wheel and four‑wheel drive), snowplows or hopper spreaders, bridge utility trucks, compressor trucks, aerial bucket trucks, wreckers with winch, tandem/10‑wheel dump trucks.

  • Class twenty‑four tractor with attachments.
  • Wing plough or other side‑mounted attachments.
  • Fork lift.
Duties
  • Survey monument setting.
  • Burning and cutting with acetylene torch.
  • Flagger (traffic control).
  • Assist a Material Storage Supervisor with material handling.
  • Perform moderately skilled tasks in construction, maintenance, mechanical repair, electrical, carpentry, masonry, welding, plumbing, and painting.
  • Relief ferry mate, drawbridge attendant, or rest area attendant duties.
  • Assist supervisors in preparing and checking reports or operating two‑way radio in a District Maintenance unit.
  • Wildlife hazard control, radio monitoring, and communication.
  • Escort vendors, contractors, or other personnel in secure areas (state‑owned airports only).
  • Act as guard/watch person or respond to fire and/or crash emergencies at state‑owned airports.
  • Perform related duties as required.
