Summary

The primary purpose is to provide the teaching and secretarial staff with help in the event of a sick or injured child.

The Health Room Assistant maintains permanent health records and reports directly to the building principal in conjunction with the school nurse. The assistant acts as a paraprofessional, supervised and directed by the building principal using procedures specified by the school nurse. The assistant will not perform any duties for which they have not been properly trained by the school nurse and must be able to demonstrate the task to be performed.

Responsibilities
  • Provide assistance and supervision to students as outlined in Individualized Healthcare Plans (IHP).
  • Document all students and staff that come to clinic.
  • Assist the school nurse in carrying out the school health program plan.
  • Provide only basic first aid as outlined by the Red Cross and the American Academy of Pediatricians.
  • Check all students presenting themselves in the health room according to the guidelines outlined in the Doctor's Standing Orders prepared for the Fayette County School Corporation.
  • Administer medications to students in school according to Indiana State Law and under the guidelines of FCSC policies and procedures.
  • Notify the school nurse of hospitalized students, unidentified rashes, unusual complaints, signs or symptoms, animal bites, or possible exposure of BBP by a student or employee.
  • Immediately report the following emergencies to the school nurse:
    • Any significant change in health status of handicapped students that occur while at school or on the bus (examples: seizure, significant loss of motor function, severe pain, abnormal behavior).
    • Any health‑related situation in which the student’s life is endangered (examples: severe bleeding, anaphylaxis, choking, amputation, diabetic reactions, respiratory arrest).
  • Assist the school nurse in maintaining all permanent health records.
  • Perform clerical responsibilities: telephone contact of families, filing, checking, and requisitioning supplies from the school nurse.
  • Maintain a safe, pleasant health room environment.
  • Provide accident report forms to the appropriate staff and follow up to ensure the report is completed and filed in the school office with the school nurse and/or principal.
  • Be knowledgeable of school emergency drills, safety and accident prevention programs.
  • Notify the school nurse of any marked deviation in any screening result.
  • The Health Room Assistant must notify the building principal when unable to be at school.
  • Health forms and parental notification by mail are made under supervision of the nurse.
  • Perform other duties as assigned by the building principal.
Qualification Requirements

Education and/or Experience High School Diploma or equivalent. Trained and current certification in First Aid and CPR, with a commitment to maintain certification. Hold a valid Indiana Driver's License. Must maintain confidentiality and show genuine concern for the well‑being of school‑age children.

Language Skills Ability to read, comprehend, and follow doctor prescriptions, health periodicals, technical or safety procedures, or governmental regulations. Ability to complete standard reports and correspondence. Ability to effectively present and respond to questions from parents, staff, or students.

Mathematical Skills Ability to add, subtract, multiply, and divide in all units of measure, using whole numbers, fractions, and decimals, and apply such concepts to practical situations.

Reasoning Ability Ability to interpret a variety of instructions furnished in written, oral, diagrammatic or schedule form; accept and utilize supervision; recognize limits, constraints, and job responsibilities.

Skills and Abilities

Ability to operate a computer and related software; develop effective working relationships with students, staff and the school community; communicate clearly and concisely in writing and orally; have dependable transportation; perform duties with awareness of all district requirements and school board policies.

Physical Demands

Physical demands include occasional sitting, walking or standing; reaching forward or above the head; bending and twisting more than the average person; visiting various buildings; occasionally lifting or moving up to 90 pounds. Specific vision abilities required include close, distance and depth perception.
