Job Description

Purpose: To plan, organize and present instruction and instructional environments that help students learn subject matter and skills that will contribute to their educational and social development.

Responsibilities
  • Management of Instructional Time: The teacher has materials, supplies, and equipment ready at the start of each lesson; gets the class started quickly; gets students on task quickly at the beginning of each lesson; maintains a high level of student time-on-task.
  • Management of Student Behavior: The teacher has established rules and procedures that govern routine administrative matters; student verbal participation; talk during activities; movement in the classroom; monitors behavior during whole-class, small group, seat work, and transitions; stops inappropriate behavior promptly and consistently while maintaining the dignity of the student.
  • Instructional Presentation: The teacher reviews previous materials; introduces lesson and learning objectives; speaks fluently; presents concepts and language understandable to students; provides relevant examples and demonstrations; assigns tasks with a high rate of success; asks appropriate questions; conducts lesson at a brisk pace; slows presentations when necessary; makes transitions efficiently; ensures assignment clarity; summarizes main points.
  • Instructional Monitoring of Student Performance: The teacher maintains clear work standards and due dates; circulates during class work; checks all students’ performance; uses oral, written, and other work products; poses questions clearly and one at a time.
  • Instructional Feedback: Provides feedback on in-class work, encourages growth; gives prompt feedback on out-of-class work; affirms correct responses; sustains feedback after incorrect or no response by probing, repeating, giving clues, or allowing more time.
  • Facilitating Instruction: Uses instructional plan compatible with school and system-wide curricular goals; uses diagnostic info to develop objectives; maintains accurate records; aligns objectives, learning strategies, assessment, and student needs; uses available resources to support the instructional program.
  • Interacting Within the Educational Environment: Treats all students fairly and equitably; interacts effectively with students, coworkers, parents, and community.
  • Performing Non-Instructional Duties: Carries out non-instructional duties as assigned; adheres to laws, policies, rules; follows professional development plan.

Minimum Training and Experience

Degree in education or related area that qualifies for licensure by the North Carolina Department of Public Instruction.

Minimum Qualifications or Standards Required to Perform Essential Job Functions

Physical Requirements: Must handle a variety of equipment and tools; lift, carry, push, pull; consistent with light work; use various classroom tools, including those for students with special needs.

Data Conception: Compare and judge functional, structural, or composite characteristics of data, people, or things.

Interpersonal Communication: Speak and signal people to convey information; receive instructions from superiors.

Language Ability: Read and prepare correspondence, reports, handbooks, forms; prepare instructional materials in prescribed format.

Intelligence: Apply logical or scientific principles to define problems, collect data, establish facts, draw conclusions; interpret technical instructions.

Verbal Aptitude: Record and deliver information; explain procedures; communicate in various technical or professional languages.

Numerical Aptitude: Use mathematical formulas; add, subtract, multiply, divide; utilize decimals; apply descriptive statistics, inference, theory.
