Job Description
Purpose and scope:
Tutor and instructs students and community members who need learning assistance in assigned discipline(s) and study skills. Primary responsibilities include providing tutoring and related services, creating an atmosphere that encourages learning, and supporting student academic development, institutional service, and professional growth.
- Effectively delivers tutoring services to students at scheduled times (may be individual or group sessions). Posts and maintains a weekly schedule of available hours for student appointments.
- Assists students with development of study skills necessary for post‑secondary education.
- Keeps regular and accurate records of tutoring sessions.
- Monitors and reviews student work; modifies and personalizes tutoring strategies to accommodate different learning styles and needs.
- Facilitates the learning process by encouraging students to take responsibility for their progress.
- Interacts with LSC staff and/or faculty to obtain necessary course syllabi or materials and to develop tutoring materials in support of the course.
- Delivers feedback as appropriate to staff and/or faculty regarding student progress.
- Continues professional education through research and review of relevant material related to the assigned subject matter.
- May assist with additional duties as needed, such as covering the Courtesy Counter, answering phones, organizing materials, checking out resources, and performing other duties as assigned.
- Completes and submits required documents in an accurate and timely manner.
- Actively participates in departmental meetings as required.
- Responsible for other reasonable related duties as assigned.
- Demonstrated proficiency in assigned discipline's subject matter.
- Excellent interpersonal and communication skills, both oral and written.
- Commitment to quality service to students.
- Ability and commitment to work collaboratively.
- Ability to work independently with little direct or continuous supervision.
The work is sedentary. The employee typically sits comfortably while performing tasks. There may be walking, standing, bending, carrying of light items, or driving an automobile. No special physical demands are required.
Work Schedule And Conditions- Uses PC workstation running on a LAN in a Microsoft Windows environment, calculator, phone, and other general office equipment.
- Interfaces with internal and external contacts as needed to carry out the functions of the position.
- Works in a climate‑controlled office with minimal exposure to safety hazards.
- High School diploma or GED equivalent.
- Transcripts and/or a proficiency test may be required.
Hourly Pay Rate: $15.60 – $28.90 (depending on certification level).
