Implement the district’s comprehensive school counseling program plan to address the unique needs of each student through targeted guidance instruction, personalized advising, and responsive counseling services.
DUTIES and RESPONSIBILITIES- Promote positive self-image in students.
- Provide orientation sessions for parents.
- Provide college day/night, career day/night, and financial aid workshops.
- Coordinate and/or deliver required legislative awareness activities such as suicide prevention, bullying prevention, digital citizenship, fentanyl poisoning, human trafficking, teen dating violence and other related student safety initiatives.
- Share information concerning programs available at the campus and throughout the district (e.g., Credit by Examination, Alternative School, Career and Technology Programs) with students.
- Conduct individual and group counseling.
- Confer with students, parents, and teachers when needed.
- Conduct individual personal/academic student and parent conferences.
- Assist in the referral process and educational placement of students with special needs.
- Serve as a resource for students, parents and staff members to access community resources.
- Play an active role in dropout prevention.
- Assist individual students in demonstrating self-confidence in achieving educational goals.
- Place students in appropriate instructional programs.
- Advise students of multiple academic opportunities.
- Advise students in preparing/updating their Personal Graduation Plan (PGP), four-year high school plan.
- Coordinate the school transition activities (Gr. 8 – Post-High School).
- Maintain student academic credit information.
- Maintain students’ high school Personal Graduation Plan (PGP) in accordance with state law.
- Complete student college and scholarship application information accurately and in a timely manner.
- In conjunction with the campus Lead School Counselor, plan, implement, and evaluate a campus-level Comprehensive School Counseling Program to serve all students through guidance curriculum, responsive services, individual planning and system support.
- Consult with the district school counseling team as needed.
- Adhere to all required timelines and established procedures.
- Meet deadlines as established by the Technology and PEIMS departments for scheduling and grade reporting.
- Maintain and communicate a current calendar of school counseling activities.
- Transcribe records of students transferring into the school.
- Initiate procedures to analyze and modify, as necessary, performance of duties based on self-analysis, feedback from students and interactions with colleagues.
- Maintain and improve professional competence through ongoing learning, including reading, coursework, and participation in professional development activities.
- Demonstrate positive interpersonal relationships.
- Cooperate with and support faculty and staff.
- Demonstrate self-control and exhibit an overall positive approach.
- Perform other duties as assigned.
- Maintain confidentiality.
- Experience working with students in an educational setting or with school-aged children
- Experience supporting students/school-aged children in crisis situations
Education/Certification:
- Professional school counselor’s certificate
Special Knowledge/
Skills:
- Knowledge of school counseling procedures, student assessment, career development, and the college admissions and financial aid application process
- Excellent organization, communication, and interpersonal skills
- Serve students in accordance with the Texas Education Agency (TEA) school counseling standards
- Knowledge of and experience in the interpretation of various assessment instruments
- Knowledgeable about secondary academic curriculum
- Knowledge/awareness of how to access community resources
