Overview

Cognito LLC a Planned Systems International (PSI) joint venture, is seeking a PRN Pharmacy Technician to support the ICE Health Services Corps (IHSC) at the Montgomery Processing Center in Conroe, TX. As a civilian contractor working for Cognito, you will utilize your abilities as a Pharmacy Technician to provide the safe delivery of high-quality health care to those in ICE custody.

IHSC exists within the organizational structure of ICE, Enforcement and Removal Operations (ERO) under the supervision of the Department of Homeland Security (DHS). The United States Public Health Service (USPHS) Commissioned Corps Officers, civil service staff and contractors comprise the healthcare professionals working together to provide quality healthcare services. IHSC serves as the medical experts for ICE for detainee health care.

Essential Functions and

Job Responsibilities

The Pharmacy Technician, the individual is responsible for the provision of a full range of pharmacy services at the assigned facility as well as ensuring compliance with the IHSC Pharmaceutical Services Directive and Guide.

  • Performs all duties related to preparation and dispensing of medication orders.
  • Provides direct care to patients within the discipline scope of practice and performs functions in accordance with current accepted practice, licensure, certification, credentialing and/or granted privileges.
  • Provides treatment of persons throughout the life span as appropriate to discipline and facility setting.
  • May be expected to respond to and/or coordinate response to medical emergencies.
  • Reads individual prescriptions and determines the name of the drug, strength, and dosage of drugs to be dispensed; correlates instructions on the prescription with policy limitations.
  • Sets up prescriptions by obtaining the correct drug stock, counting the correct amount of medication, and placing this medication in smaller containers for a final pharmacist check.
  • Consults with the Clinical Services Manager or clinical pharmacist to clarify a prescription problem.
  • Uses judgment to determine when a pharmacist should be alerted to a therapeutic problem.
  • Prioritizes requests when acting on dispensing instructions and knows when to proceed or alert for follow-up.
  • Sets up medications for new orders and arranges for pharmacist checks.
  • Receives supplies and checks receipts against requisitions; checks for shortages, breakage, deterioration, and expiration dates; report discrepancies.
  • Performs computer entry of vouchers or invoices; determines stock levels and the critical nature of drugs in supply planning.
  • Prepares requisitions and prevents inventory problems in coordination with a pharmacist.
  • Withdraws outdated drugs and initiates proper disposition (destruction or credit returns).
  • Places supply orders and handles related data entry for budgeting and reporting.
  • Manages stock levels to avoid depletion and notifies pharmacists of discrepancies.
  • Packages bulk drugs into specified quantities and containers; operates equipment such as counting and labeling machines.
  • Records all pre-packaged information for final pharmacist check.
  • Daily, checks the medicine cabinet and ensures night pharmacy service coverage; refills missing items as needed.
  • Inspects and logs refrigerator temperatures and reports problems.
  • Assists with orientations on pharmacy policy and practice for new staff; communicates protocol changes to staff.
  • Inputs workload data, analyzes statistics, and prepares quarterly reports; uses electronic health records and related software.
  • Maintains patient confidentiality and HIPAA/privacy compliance.
  • Attends and participates in general/medical staff meetings as required.
Minimum Requirements
  • Education:

    High School Diploma or GED
  • Certification: BLS for Healthcare Providers (American Heart Association)
  • Experience:

    Minimum 1 year of experience as a Pharmacy Technician
  • Credentialing:
    Ability to pass background check and drug screen; current physical and immunizations
  • Knowledge:
    Pharmaceutical nomenclature, drug forms, weights and measures, pharmaceutical equipment, receipt and storage of pharmaceuticals, bulk compounding, sterile preparations, and final prescription checks by a pharmacist
  • Multicultural/multilingual environment compatibility; ability to use interpreter services if needed
  • Adaptability to schedule changes; strong English communication skills; teamwork in a multidisciplinary environment
