Senior Social Worker – Mental Health
Location:
Conroe, Texas. This position is eligible for the Education Debt Reduction Program (EDRP), which may reimburse up to $200,000 over one to five years based on VHA review.
- United States citizenship required; non‑citizens may be appointed only if no qualified citizens available.
- Master’s degree in social work from a Council on Social Work Education (CSWE) accredited school; doctoral degree does not substitute.
- State license or certification to independently practice social work at the master’s level.
- Proficiency in spoken and written English.
- Advanced practice licensure and at least two years of related experience; one year must be at the GS‑11 grade level.
- Certification or post‑master's training from a nationally recognized organization in a specialized area of practice is preferred.
- Evidence‑based psychotherapies such as MI/MET, CBT, ACT.
- Experience with measurement‑based care tools (e.g., BAM‑R, PHQ‑9, GAD‑7, AUDIT‑C).
- Outpatient mental health setting on an interdisciplinary team.
- Adapting technology and computer‑assisted programs to deliver treatments.
- Completion of diagnostic mental health intakes.
- Ability to work nights or weekends.
- Provide specialized treatment for complex mental illness, including diagnosis and therapeutic interventions.
- Perform outpatient assessment, medication management support, and specialized group therapy for veterans with mood, psychotic, and traumatic brain injury disorders.
- Develop and implement outcome‑based measures to evaluate effectiveness of social work practice.
- Design programmatic changes based on empirical findings and direct service needs.
- Coordinate care with outside medical facilities and establish a network of community social service providers.
- Serve on an interdisciplinary team coordinating residential and community care.
- Teach, mentor, and supervise staff and students in the specialty area.
- Consult colleagues and students on psychosocial treatment of patients.
- Ensure clinical program effectiveness and modify service patterns as needed.
- Assist in suicide prevention case management for high‑risk veterans.
Typical occupational physical demands include standing, lifting, carrying, sitting, stooping, bending, pulling, and pushing. May require personal protective equipment and annual TB screening.
Work Environment & ScheduleWork is performed in an office/clinic setting with adequate lighting, heating, and ventilation. The role requires multitasking in sometimes stressful situations. Alternating schedule includes evenings and/or Saturdays.
