About the Role

We are seeking an experienced and strategic Senior Marine Underwriter / Director to drive profitable growth across our marine portfolio. This high‑impact leadership role is responsible for underwriting strategy, distribution expansion, and portfolio performance across key marine lines. The role involves broad underwriting authority, leading critical broker relationships, influencing product innovation, and scaling a specialized marine business within a growth‑focused organization.

Key Responsibilities Underwriting & Portfolio Leadership
  • Own and manage a profitable book of marine business (new and renewal)
  • Exercise advanced underwriting authority and pricing strategy within carrier guidelines
  • Analyze portfolio performance, loss trends, and market dynamics to optimize results
  • Structure and negotiate complex risks with brokers and partners
Distribution Strategy & Relationship Management
  • Develop and execute a strategic broker/agency growth plan
  • Cultivate and expand relationships with key producers and distribution partners
  • Identify, recruit, and onboard new high‑value trading partners
Product Development & Market Expansion
  • Lead or contribute to new product/program development
  • Monitor market trends, competitor activity, and emerging risks
  • Recommend and implement strategic adjustments to drive growth
Leadership & Mentorship
  • Mentor and develop junior underwriting talent
  • Serve as a subject matter expert on complex marine risks
  • Promote underwriting excellence and best practices across the team
Operational Excellence
  • Oversee account servicing, endorsements, and policy lifecycle management
  • Review inspections and ensure appropriate underwriting actions are taken
Requirements
  • Bachelor’s degree or relevant insurance designation (CPCU, ARM, etc. preferred)
  • 5+ years of commercial marine underwriting experience (or closely related field)
  • Strong technical expertise across Marine General Liability, Hull & P&I, Excess/Umbrella, Marine Property / Inland Marine
  • Proven success building broker relationships and driving production
  • Deep understanding of regional and/or national marine insurance markets
  • Strong analytical, negotiation, and decision‑making capabilities
  • Excellent communication and executive‑level relationship skills
  • Self‑starter with a growth‑oriented, entrepreneurial mindset
