Job Summary
As a Manual Operator Machinist, you will be responsible for the setup and operation of manual machine tools to produce precision parts for actuation systems. You won't just be pushing buttons; you'll be the "hands-on" expert responsible for low-volume, high-complexity components, prototype development, and critical repair work where CNC automation isn't practical.
Key Responsibilities
1. Precision Machining & Setup
- Set up and operate manual lathes, mills, grinders, and drill presses.
- Perform complex machining operations including turning, boring, facing, threading, and milling to tight tolerances.
- Select appropriate tooling, speeds, and feeds based on material properties (e.g., stainless steel, aluminum, titanium, or specialty alloys).
- Read and interpret complex blueprints, GD&T (Geometric Dimensioning and Tolerancing) symbols, and engineering sketches.
- Calculate dimensions and tolerances using basic algebra and trigonometry.
- Conduct first-article inspections and in-process checks using precision measuring instruments (micrometers, calipers, bore gauges, and optical comparators).
- Ensure all parts meet the rigorous safety and performance standards required for actuation assemblies.
- Perform routine machine maintenance and minor repairs.
- Identify and solve mechanical issues or material defects during the fabrication process.
- Experience: Typically 3-5+ years of experience in manual machining, preferably in aerospace, defense, or high-precision industrial sectors.
- Mathematical Proficiency: Strong grasp of shop math, including geometry and trigonometry.
- Tooling Mastery: Expertise in sharpening custom bits and selecting the right inserts for specific finishes.
- Attention to Detail: A "measure twice, cut once" mindset with a high degree of pride in craftsmanship.
- Physical Stamina: Ability to stand for long periods and lift up to 50 lbs.
