The Machinist – CNC HBM is responsible for setting up, operating, and maintaining CNC Horizontal Boring Mill machines to manufacture large, precision components according to engineering drawings and customer specifications. This role requires a strong understanding of machining practices, blueprint interpretation, quality control, and safe manufacturing procedures to ensure high-quality production and on-time delivery.
Key Responsibilities- Set up and operate CNC Horizontal Boring Mill (HBM) machines for precision machining operations.
- Read and interpret blueprints, engineering drawings, and work instructions.
- Select and install tooling, fixtures, and work holding devices appropriate for each job.
- Load materials and accurately align large work pieces for machining.
- Monitor machine performance and adjust offsets, speeds, and feeds as required.
- Perform first-piece, in-process, and final inspections using precision measuring instruments.
- Verify dimensions and tolerances to ensure compliance with quality standards.
- Conduct tool changes and routine machine maintenance.
- Troubleshoot machining issues and recommend process improvements.
- Maintain production records and document inspection results.
- Follow all safety regulations and maintain a clean work area.
- High school diploma or GED preferred.
- Previous three (03) years’ experience operating CNC Horizontal Boring Mills required.
- Ability to read blueprints and understand GD&T principles.
- Proficiency with precision measuring tools such as micrometers, calipers, bore gauges, and indicators.
- Strong mechanical aptitude and problem-solving skills.
- Ability to work independently and collaborate with production teams.
- Experience with Fanuc, Siemens, Heidenhain, or similar CNC controls.
- Knowledge of G-code programming and editing.
- Experience machining large components and complex geometries.
- Familiarity with overhead cranes and rigging procedures.
- Understanding of tooling selection, feeds, speeds, and machining processes.
- Ability to stand for extended periods and perform repetitive tasks.
- Ability to lift materials (up to 50lbs) and tooling as required.
- Comfortable working in a manufacturing environment with noise, heavy equipment, and moving machinery.
- Ability to wear required personal protective equipment (PPE).
