SUMMARY
The Director of Development is a senior leadership position responsible for generating philanthropic revenue to advance the mission and long-term sustainability of Meals on Wheels Montgomery County. This role leads and executes a comprehensive development strategy encompassing fundraising events, corporate sponsor ships, individual giving, community partnerships, direct mail and media campaigns, third-party fundraising initiatives, and additional revenue stream projects.
The Director of Development builds and nurtures strong relationships with donors, sponsors, board members, community leaders, and partners, while ensuring alignment with MOWMC’s mission, brand, and values. This position collaborates closely with the President & CEO.
DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
Develops, implements, and manages the Development Department’s strategic plan to meet and exceed annual revenue goals, donor engagement objectives, and long-term sustainability targets.Aligns development strategies with organizational priorities, annual budget goals, and MOWMC’s mission, vision, and values.Evaluates the effectiveness of fundraising events, partnerships, and revenue-generating initiatives; uses data and outcomes to refine strategies and build on successes.Leads the planning and execution of all fundraising events, including developing strategies to grow revenue and participation year over year.Creates sponsorship packages, manages event budgets, oversees logistics, oversees auction donations, and ensures fulfillment of sponsor benefits.Actively secures new corporate sponsor ships and cultivates long‑term relationships with existing sponsors to increase their level of support.Identifies and supports third‑party fundraising events and opportunities for MOWMC to serve as a beneficiary (e.g., charity golf tournaments), ensuring alignment with organizational values.Develops and executes direct mail and media fundraising campaigns in collaboration with the Development team.Educates donors, sponsors, and community partners on MOWMC’s mission, programs, impact, and long‑term sustainability needs.Builds and maintains strong relationships with individual donors, corporate partners, and community leaders who can influence funding and partnerships.Oversees donor stewardship processes, including timely acknowledgment, thank‑you letters, and tax documentation.Develops an annual donor engagement and marketing plan that includes strategic messaging, storytelling, and the creation of an annual Impact Report.Collaborates with the Development team on the design, printing, and distribution of development‑related marketing and communication materials.Ensures consistent brand messaging across all development and fundraising activities.Supervises the Development Team, comprised of the Community Impact Coordinator and the Technology and Data Support Coordinator. This includes training, performance management, timesheets, annual reviews, and ongoing professional development.Trains and leads staff and volunteers to support fundraising events and development initiatives.Leads the Event Committees, engaging community members in fundraising strategy, donor cultivation, and outreach efforts.Oversees the administration, accuracy, and effective use of the CRM donor database.Ensures compliance with organizational policies, donor regulations, and best practices in nonprofit fundraising.Attends staff meetings, completes required trainings, and remains informed of organizational activities and policies.Performs all other duties as assigned to support the mission and growth of MOWMC.EMPLOYMENT STANDARDS & REQUIREMENTS
- Minimum of 3 years of nonprofit development experience
- A bachelor’s degree from an accredited college is preferred
- Proven success securing major gifts, corporate sponsor ships, and/or foundation support
- Experience managing staff, budgets, donor databases (CRM systems)
- Strong strategic planning, relationship‑building, and communication skills
- Demonstrated ability to partner effectively with executive leadership and boards.
- Typically requires several hours per day of sitting, standing, or walking, with frequent interruptions and movement within an office setting.
- Requires lifting of up to 40 pounds.
- Adheres to MOWMC Policy and Procedures.
- Requires the ability to work positively with seniors, staff members, visitors, volunteers, community leaders, and the public.
- Requires a valid driver’s license, pass drug testing, and pass a background check.
