Under the general direction of the Nurse Manager for the Intermediate Care Unit and the direct supervision of a Registered Nurse or a Licensed Vocation Nurse, the Monitor Technician provides continual telemetry monitoring and a variety of patient care activities for adolescent, adult and geriatric patients requiring admission to the Unit. The Monitor Technician assists the Registered Nurse in providing high‑quality patient care activities as delegated by the registered professional nurse under the mission and objectives of the hospital.
The Monitor Technician communicates with physicians, co‑workers, volunteers, other hospital departments, and patient family members, and enhances personal and professional development through workshops, classes, seminars and in‑services. Duties may vary depending on the assigned area.
- In collaboration with licensed staff, organize patient care and general unit activities to accomplish required functions.
- Apply knowledge of growth and development over the lifespan to identify patient and family requirements relative to age‑specific needs.
- Adapt patient care activities to meet the needs of the patient and his family with a focus on the developmental level of the patient and his level of understanding.
- Adapt patient care activities to meet the needs of the adolescent, adult and geriatric patient and his family with a focus on special precautions to minimize the potential for patient injury.
- Under the direct supervision of the Registered Nurse:
- Provide patient care utilizing correct principles, procedures and techniques.
- Accept responsibility for performance of duties.
- Anticipate potential patient care problems and/or emergencies and report these to the primary nurse.
- Provide a safe environment for the provision of nursing care by maintaining the patient room in an orderly manner and assisting in maintaining neatness of the work environment.
- Prioritize and organize care to be given to each patient, using patient input when possible.
- Complete work within acceptable time limits.
- Make best use of time during shift.
- Perform several tasks simultaneously during peak workload situations.
- BLS certification.
- Completed EKG course or 1 year Telemetry experience.
- Telemetry Competency Test completion.
