Position: Fleet Technician I

Perform minor mechanical and electrical repairs with minimal supervision and assist with major repairs to ensure safety and proper performance of all district vehicles.

Duties and Responsibilities
  • Provide and maintain a personal basic hand tool set (screwdrivers, hammers, hand wrenches, socket sets, etc.) needed to perform tasks assigned.
  • Responsible for checking safety problems on the buses.
  • Evaluate mechanical problems in vehicles using diagnostic equipment.
  • Perform preventive and routine maintenance on vehicles and equipment based on established schedules.
  • Perform minor repairs to mechanical, electrical, and cooling and heating systems.
  • Mount and dismount tires, repair lighting, seats, and windows as needed.
  • Responsible for the completion of assigned work orders.
  • Provide complete and clear description of parts and labor operations.
  • Perform welding and minor body work.
  • Maintain ongoing education and certifications to ensure the highest level of bus and automotive service excellence.
  • Responsible for maintaining a clean and safe work environment.
  • Promote professional and friendly atmosphere.
  • Operate tools and equipment according to prescribed safety procedures.
  • Responsible for the care, upkeep, and safe operating conditions of all shop tools and equipment.
  • Operate buses as needed.
  • Operate department vehicles as needed.
  • Maintain regular and punctual attendance.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.
Experience
  • Two (2) years in auto and/or truck/bus maintenance, diagnostics, and repair
  • Auto-air-conditioning repair background
Qualifications

Education/Certification:

  • High School Diploma/GED
  • Valid Texas commercial driver’s Class B license with P (Passenger) and S (School Bus) endorsements (must obtain within 120 days of employment)
  • Ability to pass random alcohol and drug test
  • Acquire A/C recovery and recycling certification (within 120 days of employment)
  • Have and maintain TXDPS State Certified Vehicle Safety Inspector or must obtain within 120 workdays of hire

Special knowledge/

Skills:

  • Ability to perform fleet maintenance, including diagnosing and repairing vehicle systems such as body electrical, batteries, starting, and charging systems
  • Knowledge of vehicle parts, maintenance procedures, and operation of repair tools and equipment
  • Ability to meet the physical demands of mechanical work, including lifting heavy equipment and vehicle parts
  • Ability to read, understand, and follow verbal and written instructions with minimal supervision
  • Ability to collaborate effectively with bus driver on fleet maintenance needs
  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills with the ability to work well with others
  • Competency in computer use and maintenance tracking software
