Job Description Summary
As an OSP Field Technician II, you will work independently to support the installation, maintenance, inspection, and documentation of outside plant (OSP) telecommunications infrastructure. You will coordinate with internal teams, utility companies, contractors, and permitting agencies to ensure projects are completed in accordance with engineering standards, customer requirements, and applicable regulations. This role builds upon foundational field experience and requires strong technical aptitude, critical thinking, and problem‑solving skills.
The OSP Field Technician II is expected to accurately collect field data, identify and resolve routine issues, and provide detailed documentation that supports engineering design and construction activities.
- Conduct field surveys to verify existing utilities, right‑of‑way conditions, and project requirements
- Document field conditions using notes, sketches, maps, and photographs
- Support the development of OSP design drawings, construction plans, and work packages under senior staff guidance
- Conduct installation and maintenance of OSP infrastructure
- Perform field testing and basic troubleshooting of connectivity or performance issues
- Apply industry standards, permitting requirements, and safety practices
- Collaborate with construction crews, permitting agencies, and utility companies to support project execution
- Track project progress, field changes, and issues requiring escalation
- Maintain accurate project records, including maps, as‑builds, permits, and field changes
- Provide general support to ensure compliance with company policies and industry regulations
- Provide technical guidance and assist management with training other OSP Field Team members
- Operate company vehicles, tools, and equipment safely and responsibly
- Adhere to OSHA, company safety standards, and industry best practices while promoting a safety‑first culture
- High school diploma or equivalent
- 1–3 years of experience in OSP field operations, telecom, or related work
- Experience with fiber optic installation, testing, or splicing
- Ability to work independently with minimal supervision
- Strong communication and organizational skills
- Valid driver’s license
- Ability to read and interpret maps, drawings, and technical documentation
- Strong organizational skills with attention to detail
- Effective communication and teamwork abilities for collaboration with internal teams and external agencies
- Proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite; exposure to AutoCAD, GIS, or design software preferred
- Adaptability to shifting project priorities and conditions in the field
- Associate degree or technical certification in telecommunications, engineering, or related field
- Experience working with permits, utility coordination, and OSP documentation
- OSHA or industry safety certifications
- Experience with AutoCAD, GIS, or design software
- Working knowledge of OSP networks (fiber/copper)
- Ability to walk, stand, and work outdoors for extended periods
- Ability to lift up to 75 pounds
- Frequent bending, climbing, and working in varying field environments
- Ability to work at heights up to 25–30 feet, including climbing ladders or using bucket trucks, as required
- Exposure to outdoor weather conditions, including heat, cold, rain, and wind
- Required use of PPE, including hard hats, gloves, safety glasses, and high‑visibility clothing
- This position requires regular travel to project sites, with occasional overnight stays as necessary
- This position may require to be on call on an as‑needed basis
