Overview

The Department of Visual Arts at Coastal Carolina University, accredited by NASAD (National Association of Schools of Art and Design), is seeking a full‑time appointment at the level of Assistant Professor in Graphic Design. The position will begin in August 2026 and focuses on AI and technological integration in the graphic design curriculum.

Eligible candidates will teach undergraduate courses from first‑year through senior thesis in the BA (Graphic Design) and BFA (Visual Communication Design) sequences. Course offerings may include typography, design history, identity systems, environmental, and motion design. Emphasis is also placed on the historical context, theory, concept, and process that underpin graphic design practice.

Responsibilities
  • Teach students in classroom, laboratory, and studio settings.
  • Prepare course content, syllabi, and Moodle/curricular sites each semester; communicate with students about assignments, grades, and attendance.
  • Conduct research to advance knowledge in the field and create or present creative work; train students in research and production techniques.
  • Maintain regular office hours each week and participate in university activities such as committee assignments, meetings, ceremonies, and scholarly pursuits as prescribed by the Faculty Manual.
  • Perform other departmental duties as assigned.
Qualifications

Required Qualifications

  • Terminal degree (MFA or equivalent) in graphic design or visual communication, obtained by the date of hiring.
  • Undergraduate teaching experience in design beyond the graduate level.
  • Strong potential for excellence in teaching.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Record of research and professional activity in the field of design.
  • Commitment to underrepresented and underserved communities and academic success of all students.
  • Experience integrating technology, particularly AI, into design instruction.
  • Preference for candidates who can contribute to a diverse and inclusive curriculum.
