Library Youth Services Librarian
Provides professional assistance and educational instruction to children and youth, from infants up to seventeen years of age, their parents and caregivers, at all levels of complexity on a multitude of subjects. Provides direct assistance to patrons and performs circulation duties as necessary. Reports to Branch Librarian.
Duties for this Position:
- Selects and maintains youth materials for the Library in accordance with the Collection Development Policy
- Devises system for collection development evaluation of collections
- Survey collection needs at branch libraries
- Identifies and determines the most effective sources for purchasing materials in keeping with budgetary restraints
- Provides customer service with a concentration on youth and parents/caregivers
- Develops, implements, and promotes programs and events for children and youth at branch library
- Designs and coordinates Summer Reading Program for Library System
- Conducts outreach to children and families in the community
- Serves as a liaison with community groups, as needed
- Maintains a current understanding of developmental characteristics and issues affecting children
- Designs Programming Kits, Adventure Packs, and Special Collections
- Oversees collection maintenance of the youth collections based on condition, currency and relevancy
- Acts as liaison to South Carolina State Library for Youth Services
- Directs and coordinates Library Youth Services staff, including program planning, meetings, training, etc.
- Performs circulation tasks such as checking in/out library materials, checking in courier delivery, collecting fines, issuing new cards, pulling holds, and processing new books and periodicals
- Performs customer service tasks such as answering the phone, answering directional questions, and assisting customers in the library
- Processes payments, reconciles cashiering drawer and assists with deposits
- Provides library services including readers' advisory, answering reference questions, assisting customers with computers and copier, helping customers find print and digital materials, and planning and implementing programs
- Prepares monthly reports, statistics, incident reports, and general correspondence
- Performs upkeep and cleaning of Special Collections (i.e. Adventure Packs, Tonie Boxes®/Tonie Character Sets, Discovery Kits, Wi-Fi Hotspots, etc.)
- Creates displays and marketing materials for related programs and events
- Shelves materials
- Processes requests for reconsideration for materials in the youth collection
- Serves on the Request for Reconsideration committee
- Performs other duties as required
Position
Minimum Requirements:
- Masters' Degree in Library Science supplemented by one year of Youth Services experience and/or other library experience, or an equivalent combination of education, training, and experience that provides the required knowledge, skills, and abilities
- Applicants who have enrolled in an ALA accredited MLS degree program, and have completed or enrolled in at least half of the classes necessary to complete the degree, will be considered so long as they have at least one year of public library employment
- Exemplary customer service skills
- Excellent computer skills
- Must be physically able to operate a variety of machines and office equipment
- Must be able to pass required pre-employment physical and background check
Must be able to follow Horry County Government and Library policies and procedures
