Position Summary

The Sr. Medical Imaging Systems Administrator is responsible for the administration, maintenance, optimization, and support of the hospital’s Picture Archiving and Communication System (PACS), Cardiology Picture Archiving and Communications System (CPACS), Vendor Neutral Archive (VNA) and related imaging systems. This role ensures reliable image acquisition, storage, retrieval, and distribution across Radiology, Cardiology, and other clinical departments. The Sr. Medical Imaging System Administrator serves as both a technical systems owner and a frontline support resource, working closely with clinicians, radiologists, technologists, and IT staff to maintain efficient imaging workflows and high system availability.

This role will lead projects to upgrade existing software/hardware and implement new software/hardware working closely with IT and clinical stakeholders.

Qualifications Education
  • Bachelor’s degree in Information Technology, Health Informatics, or related field, or equivalent combination of education and experience required.
Experience
  • Minimum 5 years healthcare IT or clinical systems experience required.
  • Minimum 5 years PACS/CPACS, imaging informatics, or radiology/cardiology systems administration experience required.
  • Experience supporting clinical end users in a healthcare environment.
  • Experience in a community hospital or small health system preferred.
Licensure/Certification /Registration
  • CIIP (Certified Imaging Informatics Professional) certification preferred.
  • Vendor-specific PACS certifications preferred.
Technical Knowledge
  • PACS/CPACS/RIS/VNA administration.
  • DICOM and HL7 standards.
  • Windows server administration.
  • Networking fundamentals (TCP/IP, DNS, VPN).
  • Storage technologies (SAN/NAS).
  • Backup and disaster recovery practices.
  • Basic database troubleshooting.
Key Responsibilities System Administration & Operations
  • Administer daily operations of PACS, CPACS, VNA systems, and voice recognition systems.
  • Configure DICOM nodes, modalities, routing rules, and worklists.
  • Lead system upgrades, patches, and vendor releases.
  • Monitor system performance, uptime, and storage utilization.
  • Maintain user access, permissions, and security settings.
  • Completes other duties as assigned by department leadership.
Imaging Workflow Support
  • Support radiology and cardiology clinical workflows.
  • Troubleshoot image acquisition, routing, reconciliation, and viewing issues.
  • Configure and maintain hanging protocols and reading worklists.
  • Collaborate with radiologists and technologists to improve efficiency and throughput.
  • Ensure timely availability of studies for interpretation.
  • Maintain interfaces between PACS, RIS, CPACS, EHR/EMR, voice recognition, and billing systems.
  • Support HL7, DICOM, and IHE integrations.
  • Coordinate testing and validation of new interfaces or modalities.
  • Work with vendors and internal IT teams to resolve connectivity issues.
Technical Support
  • Provide support for imaging applications and related infrastructure.
  • Diagnose hardware, software, and network-related issues.
  • Coordinate vendor escalations and service requests.
  • Participate in on-call support rotation as needed.
Projects & Continuous Improvement
  • Lead or support medical imaging system (software/hardware) upgrades, migrations, and system implementations.
  • Assist with onboarding new modalities or service lines.
  • Participate in enterprise imaging initiatives.
  • Develop documentation, procedures, and training materials.
Training & Communication
  • Train clinical and operational staff on system use.
  • Provide user education and workflow guidance.
  • Serve as liaison between Imaging departments and IT.
