Salary Range: $21.11 To $27.44 Hourly
Job SummaryThis position performs firefighting work in combating, extinguishing, and preventing fires; provides emergency medical care to the sick and injured; performs routine maintenance and cleaning of fire stations, apparatus, and equipment in accordance with NFPA
(National Fire Protection Association) 1001 standards.
Essential Functions:

Attends required training programs; reads necessary manuals, books, etc.; practices skills and techniques; completes required proficiency tests; learns equipment operation and use; learns geography of the county.
Responds as part of a team when an incident occurs; safely operates assigned equipment at fire scenes, involving laying and connecting hoses; holding nozzles and directing fire streams; raising and climbing ladders; using chemical extinguishers, bars, hooks, lines, and other equipment.
Provides emergency medical assistance ists in fire investigations.
Assists with loading equipment on apparatus; cleans and maintains equipment, fire station, and fire hydrants.
Performs salvage and overhaul operations; carries smoldering materials from buildings to reduce fire and smoke damage to building and contents; uses salvage covers to protect furniture, clothing, and other valuables from further damage.
Performs daily equipment checks as assigned.
Cleans equipment or tools after each use and on a regular basis.
Participates in a daily routine involving cooking meals, cleaning the dorm area, and cleaning the station grounds.
Works as part of a team twice a year to inspect, test, and gauge fire hydrants; cleans the area around hydrants, and paints hydrants.
Assists with servicing and maintaining motorized equipment.
Assists with documenting pre-fire plans of designated establishments. Participatesinandhelps set up communityactivitiesrelatingtothefireservice. Demonstratesfirepreventionandsafetytechniquesforschools,clubs,etc.
Additional DutiesEmployees in this classification may be expected to perform any related duties as required by proper authority.
Knowledge, Skills, and AbilitiesKnowledge of Rockdale County Fire Codes and related ordinances. Knowledge of modern firefighting principles, practices, and methods.
Knowledge of firefighting equipment including personal protective equipment. Knowledgeofhazardidentificationandcorrectionincludingescaperouteplanning. Knowledgeofthebehaviorandmechanicsofvarioustypesoffires.
Knowledge of the principles of hydraulics as applied to fire suppression. Knowledge of the street system and physical layout of the county.
Knowledge of emergency care methods, techniques, and equipment.
Knowledge of the National Incident Management System and the Incident Command System. Skill in operating heavy emergency equipment.
Skill in the use of tools, equipment, and apparatus to fight fires, rescue, or provide emergency medical care.
Ability to understand and follow written and oral instructions.
Ability to establish and maintain cooperative relationships with fellow employees and the public.
Ability to climb, balance, stoop, kneel, crouch, and crawl in firefighting, emergency medical, and rescue operations.
Ability to perform heavy manual labor over extended periods of time, often under adverse physical and environmental conditions.
Abilitytoseeandperceivecoloranddepth. Ability to lift more than 60pounds.
Ability to hear and speak.
Working ConditionsTypically performed at the fire station or at fire scenes. The employee may be exposed to inclement weather, extreme temperatures, smoke, fumes, and hazardous situations, and materials that require the use of protective equipment.
Minimum Qualifications- High school diploma or GED.
- Be at least 18 years of age.
- Must not have been convicted of a felony.
Must obtain certification as a Georgia Firefighter within one (1) year of employment.
Preferences- Certification as a Georgia Emergency Medical Technician.
