Job SummaryEmployees in this class perform manual work requiring techniques and knowledge above the basic laboring level in the upkeep of County roadways, right‑of‑ways, parks, facilities, and other areas for an assigned County department. This class is differentiated from the Maintenance Worker II class by assisting supervisors in maintaining equipment logs and inventory, training lower‑level employees, inspecting areas for repair/maintenance issues, acting as supervisor when needed, and handling administrative tasks.
EssentialFunctions
- Maintains grounds at County facilities; mows, clears weeds, and prunes trees, shrubbery, and plants.
- Applies fertilizers and chemical treatments, removes debris with backpack blowers.
- Maintains County right‑of‑way areas by trimming trees, mowing, clearing weeds, and hedging.
- Repairs and maintains roads, patches potholes, and handles related tasks.
- Maintains drainage facilities, cleans ditches, and utilizes power tools for stormwater maintenance.
- Sets up safety zones on roads or right‑of‑way, places signs, and directs traffic.
- Performs minor plumbing work at restrooms and cleans/restocks park facilities.
- Maintains small engines and equipment; changes oil, blades, and sharpens tools.
- Uses hand and power tools, maintains and repairs them, completes work order reports, and records inventory.
- Trains lower‑level employees on proper work methods and job procedures.
- Acts as supervisor in the absence of the assigned supervisor.
- Installs recreational and playground equipment, including fences and gates.
- Performs heavy labor: loading/unloading asphalt, shoveling gravel and dirt, lifting and moving lumber, mixing and placing cement, and disposing of trash.
- Performs minor electrical work: installing light switches and hanging fixtures.
- Paints equipment, fences, and buildings.
- Operates light‑duty trucks and handles traffic control at construction sites.
- Performs inventory of equipment and supplies.
- Prepares softball, football, and soccer fields for games by dragging and chalking outdoor fields.
- Applies mulch or pine straw to covered landscaped areas.
Employees in this classification may be expected to perform any related duties as required by proper authority.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities- Knowledge of departmental policies, procedures, activities, and organizational structure.
- Knowledge of manual maintenance methods, procedures, tools, equipment, and tasks.
- Some knowledge of supervisory principles and practices.
- Ability to follow routine verbal and written instructions.
- Ability to understand and follow safety procedures.
- Physical ability to lift heavy objects over short distances and lighter objects over longer distances.
- Capability to perform heavy manual labor for extended periods in diverse weather conditions.
- Ability to complete basic work reports, repair/maintenance logs, and other documentation.
- Capacity to learn job‑related information primarily through on‑the‑job training.
- Skill to establish and maintain effective relationships with County employees and the general public.
Work is performed primarily outdoors with exposure to noise, dust, dirt, grease, water, machinery, and varying weather conditions. Protective devices such as gloves and safety jackets may be required.
Minimum Qualifications- Some supervisory or lead worker experience.
