Position: Discovery Garden Program Coordinator (Seasonal)

Discovery Garden Program Coordinator | $18.00 | Grant-funded (Seasonal / Part-Time Opportunity – Ideal for College Students)

The salary for this position is at $18.00 hourly. We take into consideration an individual’s background and experience in determining salary; therefore, base pay offered may vary considerably depending on job-related knowledge, skills, and experience. The compensation package includes a wide range of other benefits and earned time off that vary depending on part-time or full-time status.

Job Summary

The Seasonal Garden Program Coordinator supports the daily operations of the YMCA raised-bed garden during the spring, summer, and/or fall season. This hands‑on position is ideal for college students interested in sustainability, agriculture, environmental studies, education, or nonprofit work. The Coordinator leads garden planting and maintenance and helps facilitate engaging, garden‑based programs for youth and families in a safe, positive, and supportive environment in accordance with YMCA policies and procedures.

This role provides valuable experience in program facilitation, teamwork, community engagement, and sustainable growing practices.

Essential Functions
  • Lead planting, watering, weeding, harvesting, and general garden upkeep.
  • Support the daily care and basic maintenance of the raised bed garden and aquaponics system.
  • Help monitor plant health and report pest or disease concerns to supervisor.
  • Lead setup, support, and cleanup of garden‑based youth and family programs.
  • Prepare materials and supplies for seasonal programs, weekend activities, and special events.
  • Engage positively with all ages of participants and families during activities.
  • Maintain garden tools, equipment, and program areas in a clean and organized manner.
  • Assist with basic record‑keeping and data tracking as assigned.
  • Follow safety guidelines and report accidents or incidents promptly.
Relationships

This seasonal position reports to the Executive Director or designated supervisor. The Coordinator works closely with YMCA staff, volunteers, and program participants and may provide basic task guidance to volunteers during workdays or events.

Qualifications

Required:

  • Interest in gardening, sustainability, food systems, agriculture, education, or community programming.
  • Ability to work positively with children, families, and team members.
  • Strong communication and teamwork skills.
  • Willingness to work outdoors in various weather conditions.
  • Certifications required within 30 days of hire: CPR, First Aid, and AED (training may be provided).

Preferred:

  • Coursework or major in Environmental Studies, Sustainability, Agriculture, Education, Biology, or related field.
  • Previous experience working with youth, camps, or community programs.
  • Basic knowledge of gardening or food production.
Work Conditions
  • Ability to stand, walk, bend, kneel, and work outdoors for extended periods.
  • Ability to lift and carry up to 30 pounds.
  • Ability to use basic hand tools for gardening and light maintenance.
  • Ability to respond calmly and appropriately in emergency situations.
