Position Summary /

Job Duties

The Morgridge Institute seeks a motivated Student Graphic Designer to start immediately and continue through the Fall 2026 semester and onward. The student will work at the interface of graphic design and scientific storytelling, and will support the lead Graphic Designer in creating effective communication material for labs, staff, and the communications team  are seeking an individual who is detail-oriented, demonstrates the ability to communicate and collaborate effectively, and is able to multitask and work well under deadlines.

The student should be able to commit to 10–15 hours per week and have availability during the work week (Monday through Friday, 8 a.m. to 5 p.m.). Core

Responsibilities
  • Scientific Illustration & Data Visualization: Conceptualize and execute high-resolution technical figures—including biochemical pathways, molecular structures, and instrumental schematics—for peer-reviewed manuscripts and grant proposals.
  • Presentation & Event Graphics: Design high-impact visual assets, scientific posters for international conferences, and professional slide decks for keynote presentations and symposia.
  • Creative Assets & Cover Art: Produce specialized artistic content, such as journal cover art, and develop various graphics for the laboratory website and digital outreach channels.
  • Communications & Layout: Manage the production of laboratory newsletters, promotional handouts, and scheduling materials for institute-wide events using Adobe InDesign.
  • Design Consultation & Iteration: Provide expert feedback to researchers to improve the clarity and impact of their visual communications. This includes generating new material and refining content using existing laboratory templates.
Qualifications

The successful candidate will serve as a primary creative partner, responsible for a diverse range of tasks that bridge the gap between complex science and visual clarity. You will collaborate directly with the lead Graphic Designer and research staff to translate experimental data into sophisticated visual narratives across multiple formats, from high stakes grant applications to institutional event scheduling.

Ideal candidates will be working toward an associate or bachelor’s degree.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

Technical Proficiencies

  • Vector Illustration:
    High proficiency in Adobe Illustrator, with a focus on creating precise, scalable vector assets.
  • Layout & Typography:
    High proficiency in Adobe InDesign to produce professional-grade document layouts and structured typography.
  • Visual Communication: A sophisticated design aesthetic with a focus on clean, modern visuals and complex data visualization.
  • Iterative Design:
    The ability to translate complex technical concepts into accessible visual content, with a proven capacity to incorporate stakeholder feedback.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Subject Matter Interest: A demonstrated interest or background in biotechnology, chemistry, or the broader life sciences.
  • Multimedia Tools:
    Experience with Adobe Photoshop or 3D rendering software to enhance visual storytelling.
Physical Demands

Work is normally performed in a typical office environment. No or very limited physical effort is required. No or very limited exposure to physical risk.
