Primary Purpose

A peer mentor provides social, emotional, and/or academic support as needed for students within the TRiO program. Mentoring allows students to form a connection to campus and their community through one-on-one interactions and group meetings with mentees. Mentors are academically successful and have a desire to purposefully impact TRiO students navigating college, both academically and socially. Work hours vary according to the mentor's availability and assigned mentees, but will not exceed 20 hours per week.

This position is for the  Academic Year.

Description of Essential Functions

Mentoring (90% of Time)

* Be an encouraging role model and advocate for incoming students.

* Be a knowledgeable guide for new students.

* Be a thoughtful facilitator who provides access to people and resources.

* Maintain regular contact with mentees.

* Serve as a positive social and academic role model.

* Educate new students about various resources and student services available at Southwestern.

* Complete FERPA training within first quarter and adhere to guidelines.

General Duties (10% of Time)

* Participate in new mentor orientation (once).

* Participate in monthly in-service trainings.

* Participate in the orientation program for new TRiO SSS participants.

Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

* Must be a current participant or alumni of Southwestern's TRiO SSS program.

* Must be attending Southwestern for the 2026-27 academic year or be a Southwestern alumni.

* Additionally, mentors must maintain good academic standing and a minimum cumulative GPA of 2.75.

* Must be able to work effectively with students of various cultural and socioeconomic backgrounds, demonstrating an ability to work with others in a courteous and cooperative fashion.
