The primary purpose of this position is to instruct and supervise nursing students in clinical and/or lab settings, and student evaluations.

Lab Instruction Assistant (90% of Time)
  • Instruct, supervise, and document student activities in the clinical and/or lab setting, being sensitive to student needs, level of preparation and safety.
  • Participate in faculty and student evaluation meetings twice a term.
  • Use instructional methodology appropriate to the audience and to the student (lecture, demonstration, group discussion, technology‑enhanced delivery, computer‑assisted delivery, distance delivery) to meet diverse learning activities.
  • Evaluate students according to the criteria in the course outline and other applicable college policies and procedures. Turn in grades according to college policy and procedure.
  • Create a course syllabus for each course taught which includes course outcomes, structure, materials, grading criteria, due dates, exam dates, and office hours.
  • Work effectively with colleagues and students of various cultural and socioeconomic backgrounds in a courteous and cooperative fashion.

  • Ensure compliance with all Southwestern Oregon Community College rules, regulations, and policies.
  • Demonstrate continued professional growth by staying current in and expanding knowledge of teaching techniques.

    Required Qualifications
    • Bachelor of Science Degree in Nursing
    • Current, unencumbered RN license to practice in Oregon
    • Minimum of two (2) years demonstrated clinical experience
    Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
    • Mastery of the subject area sufficient to instruct students in the clinical setting and evaluate performance.
    • Knowledge of and ability to learn teaching methods and clinical skills appropriate for a variety of ages, backgrounds, learning abilities and styles.
    • Knowledge of computers and ability to integrate appropriate technologies into the nursing curriculum.
    • Ability to use instructional delivery methods that enhance broad public access to post‑secondary education.
    • Ability to evaluate student progress empirically and holistically and to develop curriculum materials for individuals and classes.
    • Ability to motivate and inspire students.
    • Effective oral and written communication in English at various language levels, with simplification and demonstration.
    • Adult‑oriented instructional delivery methods.
    • Cooperative teamwork with department members and college community in meetings and projects.
    • Ability to review, understand and apply concepts from training programs, conferences and professional literature.
    • Willingness to teach at various hours as required.
    Preferred Qualifications
    • Related teaching experience at the college level or equivalent.
    • Related clinical experience in an acute care facility.
    Other Requirements
    • Ability to successfully pass a criminal history check.
    • Willingness to abide by agency requests for health clearance, including drug test and immunizations.
    • Eligibility for approval as a clinical instructor by the Oregon State Board of Nursing.
