The Coos Bay School District is accepting applications for experienced Instructional Specialist in our Academic Skills Center

POSITION

DESCRIPTION:

The Instructional Specialist within the Special Education Department is responsible for delivering high-quality targeted instruction as prescribed by the Special Education Case Manager. The specialist will employ evidence-based practices and strategies to address specific learning challenges and ensure all students have access to appropriate educational opportunities. This role is primarily responsible for direct instruction aligned with student goals, facilitates collaboration between special and general education staff, and supports compliance of IEP services.

Qualifications
  • Current Oregon Teaching License
  • Strong ability to work as a team member
  • Must possess excellent oral and written communication skills
  • Knowledge of instructional practices and a variety of classroom management strategies
  • Knowledge of data collection to inform instruction and planning
  • High level of patience, emotional resilience, and the ability to stay calm and focused under pressure
  • Knowledge of neuroscience and its implications on learning and development for students with disabilities preferred
  • Knowledge of Special Education law and processes preferred
  • Collaborative Problem-Solving training preferred
Essential Duties and Responsibilities Instructional Delivery
  • Delivers Tier 3 interventions within MTSS.
  • Scaffold instruction aligned with IEP goals and services.
  • Regularly monitor and assess the effectiveness of interventions, use data-driven decision-making to adjust strategies as needed with the support of the Special Education Case Manager.
  • Utilize research-based strategies and programs to support students' academic growth and behavioral improvement.
Classroom Management
  • Establish a consistent routine, clear visual cues, and a supportive classroom atmosphere to minimize disruptive behaviors.
  • Deliver targeted small-group, one-on-one, and push-in instruction to students.
  • Provide support for students with behavioral or emotional challenges, utilizing strategies that foster positive behavior and emotional well-being.
Communication with Parents and Staff
  • Serve as a liaison between special education and general education staff to support inclusive practices.
  • Provide guidance and support to general education teachers to implement accommodations and modifications.
  • Facilitate communication with parents/guardians to address concerns and provide updates on student progress.
Professional Collaboration and Communication
  • Work with educators and support staff to promote student success and meet individual needs by aligning interventions with curriculum and classroom practices.
  • Establish and maintain cooperative, professional working relationships with families, administrators, teachers, and agencies.
  • Collaborate with building administrators to address systemic or classroom-specific issues related to special education.
  • Provide support and resources to educational assistants as needed regarding IEP-related procedures and compliance.
  • Stay updated on current research, trends, and best practices in intervention strategies.
  • Work closely with the MTSS team and the Special Education Case Manager
Documentation and Compliance
  • Maintain accurate records of student progress, interventions, and outcomes for reporting and planning purposes.
Advocacy
  • Positively advocate for students' needs, ensuring they receive appropriate resources and support.
  • Work to create an inclusive environment where students with disabilities can thrive both academically and socially.
