The City of Coos Bay is soliciting applications for the position of lateral and entry level Police Officers. Starting salary for lateral hires may be negotiable based on relevant law enforcement experience. Lateral applicants will automatically be awarded an interview and are not required to complete the NTN testing phase. In addition, if a Lateral applicant is hired, they will receive 40‑80 hours of sick leave, the amount will be based off of years of experience and at the Chief’s discretion.

A Lateral applicant may also be eligible for early release from probation depending on performance and at the discretion of the Chief. To qualify as a lateral candidate, you must be currently certified through Oregon DPSST or through another agency that has reciprocity with Oregon DPSST. JOB DESCRIPTION GENERAL STATEMENT OF DUTIES

Performs peace officer functions of law enforcement and crime prevention work including patrol and investigation. Controls traffic, enforces state and local traffic regulations, and other ordinances and laws. Works directly with citizens in the areas of criminal and civil law enforcement. Incumbents in this position may be required to work rotating shifts and days off as designated or assigned. Performs related work as required including planning and research.

SUPERVISION

RECEIVED

Works under the direct supervision of a Police Sergeant or senior officer who assigns work details and reviews work for conformance to laws and departmental policies, rules and regulations.

SUPERVISION EXERCISED

Supervision is not a normal responsibility of positions in this class. However, assignments may include field training officer responsibility, supervision of police reserves and other volunteers, and shift supervisor in absence of a Sergeant.

TYPICAL EXAMPLES OF WORK

An employee in this classification may perform any of the following duties. However, these examples do not include all the specific tasks which an employee may be expected to perform. May be rotated to areas of special emphasis such as investigations, alcohol and accident reduction, crime prevention, reserve coordination, special tactics and canine training.

  • Patrols roads, residential and business areas of the City. Enforces traffic and criminal laws and issues citations or warnings to violators. Patrols school zones and high activity areas. Conducts building security checks, checks for suspicious persons and vehicles.
  • Responds to a wide variety of radio calls including thefts, juvenile complaints, burglaries, rapes, family disputes, barking dogs, loud parties, etc., and takes appropriate action. Performs minor first aid at scenes of accidents and directs traffic if necessary.
