Position: Temporary Biological Science Research Technician 1

Job Summary

This role supports field data collection for a graduate research project on Marbled Murrelet nesting habitat at the Elliott State Research Forest. The position is located in Coos Bay, Oregon, and involves ground support for tree climbers, measuring tree and vegetation, and managing autonomous recording units (ARUs).

Key Responsibilities
  • Assisting tree climbers with gear, tying knots, and ensuring safety (25%).
  • Programming, deploying, and maintaining ARUs at field sites (25%).
  • Conducting understory vegetation inventories in a 10‑m radius plot (30%).
  • Recording data on paper datasheets following established protocols (20%).
  • Driving between field sites and maintaining a university vehicle or personal vehicle.
Qualifications – Required
  • Two years of college‑level courses in forestry, natural resources, or a closely related field, OR equivalent training and experience.
  • Strong interpersonal skills, ability to work independently outdoors, and attention to detail.
  • Experience working under strenuous field conditions and challenging terrain.
  • Ability to work collaboratively with colleagues and stakeholders from diverse backgrounds.
  • Valid driver’s license and clean motor‑vehicle history check.
Preferences – Desired Experience
  • Experience in the Oregon Coast Range.
  • Conducting understory vegetation surveys.
  • Operating and maintaining ARUs (battery/SD‑card replacement).
  • Assisting tree climbers or arborists.
  • Long field seasons (4+ months).
Working Conditions & Schedule

The position involves long hours outdoors in all weather, traversing steep, rugged terrain. The field season runs from early April to mid‑September, with a 4‑day on/3‑day off schedule; workdays typically last 10 hours. Lodging is in hotels or Airbnb during the early season, with later fieldwork requiring self‑supplied camping gear.

Compensation

Hourly rate: $18.06 – $23.88. Pay period 16th–15th of following month; pay date last working day of month.
