Provide special education students with learning activities and experiences designed to help them fulfill their potential for intellectual, emotional, physical, and social growth. Develop or modify curricula and prepare lessons and other instructional materials to student ability levels. Work in general education, self-contained, team, departmental, co-teach, or itinerant capacity as assigned.
QUALIFICATIONS:
Texas Certified - Multiple content areas preferred
Texas Special Education Teacher Certification
Texas ESL Supplemental Certification
Bachelor's degree from an accredited university required
Special Knowledge/Skills:
Knowledge of the Individual Education Plan (IEP) goal setting process and implementation
Knowledge of the special education process Admission, Review, and Dismissal (ARD) Committee process
General knowledge of t curriculum and instruction
Ability to work with children with varied disabilities
Ability to understand and use data
Growth mindset
Ability to communicate effectively
EXPERIENCE:
Completion of student teaching or approved internship
MAJOR
DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
Planning
- Collaborate with learners, parents, and other members of staff to develop an IEP through the ARD Committee process for each learner assigned.
- Conduct assessments of learner needs related to the grade level curriculum (i.e., cognitive processes; learning styles, etc.) and use the result to plan for instructional activities.
- Participate in ARD/IEP Committee meetings on a regular basis.
- Plan and use appropriate instructional and learning strategies, activities, materials, and equipment that reflect understanding of the learning styles and needs of learners assigned.
- Implement an instructional, therapeutic, or skill development program for assigned learners and show written evidence of preparation as required
- Work cooperatively with classroom educators to provide needed accommodations and/or modifications to the general education curricula and classroom activities to ensure full access for learners eligible for special education.
- Design and implement a plan to develop learners' self-advocacy skills
- Create learning spaces that are conducive to learning and appropriate for the physical, social, and emotional development of learners.
- Provide a safe learning environment
- Consult with classroom educators regarding the management of learner behavior including positive behavioral supports according to the IEP.
- Manage learner behavior in accordance with the CISD Classroom Management Framework, the Student Code of Conduct, the Student Handbook, and Individual Education Plans.
- Intervene in crisis situations through de-escalation techniques, and, if necessary, through physical management as required to abate the crisis.
- Take all necessary and reasonable precautions to protect equipment, materials, and facilities.
- Assist in the selection of books, equipment, and other instructional materials.
- Work cooperatively with other educators to provide individualized instruction for special populations, reflective of learner need, in accordance with district, state, and federal guidelines.
- Support learners relative to their educational, personal, and social growth and development
- Respect the cultures, backgrounds, and values of learners and their families.
- Engage in a professional learning community to ensure success of all learners.
- Collaborate with campus Problem Solving Team (PST) regarding intervention strategies for learners.
- Design and implement accommodations/modifications that will allow learners served through special education to access extra-curricular activities.
- Ensure that learners served through special education have access to the full grade level curriculum (may be vertically aligned).
- Present subject matter according to guidelines established by the ARD/IEP.
- Cooperate with general educators in designing effective accommodations and/or modifications that ensure learner access to grade level instruction.
- Employ a variety of instructional techniques and media to meet the needs and capabilities of each learner assigned.
- Use digital devices as a tool for instruction, assessment, and evidence of learning.
- Collect and utilize ongoing data/assessments of learner achievement to make databased decisions that ensure learner progress and growth.
- Provide or supervise personal care, medical care, and feeding of learners as specified in the ARD/IEP.
- Maintain documentation of instruction and learner progress, and report progress in accordance with district procedures.
- Administer statewide assessment in accordance with established procedures.
- Consult district and community resources, as appropriate, regarding education, social, medical, and personal needs of learners
- Establish and maintain open communication by conducting conferences with parents, learners, principals, and educators.
