Summary

Performs a variety of routine and complex technical, aesthetic, & administrative work in plans review and analysis, inspection, and enforcement to determine compliance with all applicable codes as well as accepted standards relating to building codes. Provides technical assistance to field inspectors in all matters relating to building codes. Exercises considerable initiative and independent judgment under the general direction of the Building Official and City Architect, with emphasis on architectural design and aesthetics.

Job Duties and Responsibilities
  • May interpret and enforce all provisions of the Florida Building Code.
  • Reviews plans and applications for permits to ensure compliance with aesthetic appropriateness, codes, laws and ordinances. Advises applicants of required changes.
  • Makes reports and recommendations on occupancy use and adequacy of accommodations as well as aesthetic requirements.
  • May assist the Building Official or Deputy Building Official as needed.
  • Provides design review of architectural plans for code compliance with emphasis on aesthetic considerations and makes recommendations for refinement under the direction of the City Architect.
  • May assist the City Architect by occasionally serving on the Development Review Committee providing advice on the aesthetics of public and private buildings and makes recommendations based on Board of Architect and building code guidelines.
  • May assist the City Architect and Building Official by attending meetings on their behalf.
  • May assist the City Architect by facilitating the weekly BOA meetings on his behalf.
  • May coordinate activities related to the Board of Architects.
  • Performs other related tasks as required.
Qualifications
  • High school diploma or equivalent.
  • Must be a licensed architect and certified by the State of Florida and the Miami‑Dade County Board of Rules and Appeals in accordance with Chapter 8, Article 2 of the County Code, and be qualified as one of the following:
    • (1) Possess a current Florida Professional Engineer license and has practiced for at least five years after licensure with not less than two years in the HVHZ or, in lieu of the HVHZ experience, has completed an eight‑hour HVHZ training course approved by the Board of Rules and Appeals before certification;
    • (2) Possess a current Florida Registered Architect license and has practiced for at least five years after licensure with not less than two years in the HVHZ or, in lieu of the HVHZ experience, has completed an eight‑hour HVHZ training course approved by the Board of Rules and Appeals before certification;
    • (3) Possess a current certification as a General Contractor issued by the Florida Construction Industry Licensing Board with five years experience after licensure with not less than two years in the HVHZ or, in lieu of the HVHZ experience, has completed an eight‑hour HVHZ training course approved by the Board of Rules and Appeals before certification;
    • (4) Possess a current General Contractor Certificate of Competency or Certificate of Eligibility issued by the Miami‑Dade County Construction Trades Qualifying Board with five years' experience after licensure with not less than two years in the HVHZ or, in lieu of the HVHZ experience, has completed an eight‑hour HVHZ training course approved by the Board of Rules and Appeals before certification.

  • Annual Leave: 80 hours in the first year of employment, increasing up to 188 hours after 25 years. Employees must take 40 hours of annual leave each year.
