Current Employees:

The Police Officer Trainee is an entry-level, non-sworn position responsible for completing state-required law enforcement training and certification requirements in preparation for appointment as a sworn University of Miami Police Officer. The role provides foundational knowledge, skills, and professional development needed to support public safety and law enforcement services within a higher education environment.

CORE JOB FUNCTIONS
  • Attends and successfully completes the Florida Basic Recruit Training Program at a Criminal Justice Standards and Training Commission (CJSTC)-certified academy.
  • Participates in required lectures, practical exercises, demonstrations, inspections, examinations, formations, and related academy activities.
  • Studies law enforcement principles, procedures, tactics, ethics, and other required academic and practical training topics.
  • Demonstrates competency in high-liability training areas, including defensive tactics, firearms, emergency vehicle operations, and first responder skills.
  • Maintains physical fitness standards required to meet academy expectations and perform future law enforcement duties.
  • Adheres to conduct, discipline, grooming, uniform, appearance, and attendance standards established by the training academy and UMPD.
  • Passes required academy examinations and successfully completes applicable training milestones.
  • Completes the State Officer Certification Examination upon completion of the Basic Recruit Training Program.
  • Participates in UMPD orientation, onboarding, and pre-sworn training activities as assigned.
  • Complies with University, department, academy, Florida Department of Law Enforcement (FDLE), and CJSTC requirements applicable to the trainee role.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.
  • Adheres to University and unit-level policies and procedures and safeguards University assets.

    QUALIFICATIONS:
    • Minimum age: 21 years. May apply before applicant’s 21st birthday.
    • U.S. Citizen
    • High school diploma or GED; at least 54 college credits from a credited college or University or three (3) years of continues military service.
    • Must possess a valid Florida Drivers’ License with an acceptable driving record
    • Must meet all minimum standards established by the Florida Department of Law Enforcement (FDLE) and the Criminal Justice Standards and Training Commission pursuant to Florida Statute 943.13 and successfully pass a comprehensive preemployment background.
    Knowledge, Skills and Attitudes:

    Ability to learn, comprehend, and apply law enforcement concepts, procedures, and legal principles. Ability to follow oral and written instructions, policies, and regulations. Ability to communicate effectively, both verbally and in writing. Ability to maintain professional working relationships with peers, supervisors, faculty, students, staff, and members of the public in a diverse university environment. Demonstrated integrity, ethical judgment, and commitment to public service.

    Ability to maintain regular and punctual attendance and respond as an essential employee during emergencies.

    College/Military requirements:

    Non-certified applicants for sworn positions must possess a minimum of an associate degree (A.A. or A.S.); or have satisfactorily completed a minimum of fifty-four (54) accredited college credits recognized by the U.S. Department of Education; or three (3) years of full-time continuous military service or law enforcement service; or a combination thereof. Applicants must show proof at the time of application.

    Adult Basic Educational Test (TABE):

    If the Applicant does not have the above-mentioned college/military requirements, they will be required to take TABE test. The TABE test must be taken before applying, and proof must be shown at the time of application.

    Applicants must receive a U.S. Department of Education’s National Reporting System (NRS) Level 6 score or better in each section of the test except for the mathematics section. Test results are valid for two years and must be taken prior to applying.
