Position
The University of Miami Health System (UHealth) IT Department invites applications for a full‑time Manager, Security Operations Center (SOC) to work onsite in Miami, Florida.
In this role, the Manager analyzes and directs the activities of the security operations team and supervises all assigned security operations staff. The incumbent leads initiatives related to threat analysis, monitoring, system and application protection, responds to cybersecurity alerts, and supports strategic IT initiatives.
Core Responsibilities- Designs improved work systems by revising standards, policies, and procedures, employee work methods and utilization, and staffing levels.
- Plays an integral role in the hiring, training, counseling and development of staff.
- Develops and maintains a professional development and training plan for staff.
- Advises subordinates on technical problems and solutions, task prioritization, and support methodology.
- Serves as the point of contact for the security operations management team on day‑to‑day SOC initiatives.
- Ensures a consistently high level of customer service throughout the department by creating appropriate service standards, observing regularly, and mentoring personnel.
- Documents and modifies guidelines to promote efficiency within the unit.
- Supervises the performance of unit supervisors and staff.
- Administers and processes staff performance appraisals.
- Establishes and assesses the effectiveness of internal controls within the unit and compliance with University policies.
- Ensures employees are trained on controls and University policies.
- Ensures IT security operations processes adhere to established documented security processes supporting the University mission.
The Manager leads the daily operations of the Enterprise Security Operations team, shaping how the University detects, responds to, and learns from cyber threats. The leader oversees a 24x7x365 shift‑based security environment, strengthens incident response discipline, improves monitoring practices, and ensures the team has the clarity, tools, and support needed to perform at a high level.
The ideal candidate is a collaborative security operations leader who combines technical judgment, calm decision‑making, and a strong commitment to developing people. The role requires leading through pressure, building trust across teams, and continuously improving SOC operations.
- Lead 24x7x365 SOC operations: manage daily operations, shift coverage, staffing plans, handoffs, and workflows.
- Drive incident response excellence: serve as escalation leader for incidents, guide triage and containment, coordinate with technical and business partners, and promote clear communication.
- Optimize security platforms and partnerships: oversee use of core monitoring and response platforms, partner with technology owners, and liaise with managed detection and response providers.
- Develop and retain talent: recruit, coach, mentor, and develop SOC team members; create training routines, career pathways, and feedback practices.
- Improve outcomes and operational maturity: use metrics, lessons learned, and stakeholder feedback to improve incident response processes, playbooks, SLAs, procedures, and day‑to‑day performance.
Bachelor’s degree in Cybersecurity, Information Technology, Computer Science, or a related field preferred.
Preferred Certifications and Experience- Certified Information Systems Security Professional (CISSP)
- Certified Information Security Manager (CISM)
- CompTIA Security+ / Certified Ethical Hacker (CEH)
- Relevant cloud security certifications (AWS, Azure, etc.)
- Minimum 5 years of relevant experience in cybersecurity, security operations, incident response, infrastructure security, or a closely related field.
- Minimum 3 years of supervisory or team leadership experience, including leading shift‑based teams or a 24x7x365 SOC environment.
- Strong understanding of security monitoring, triage, threat detection, and response workflows.
- Ability to lead, prioritize, delegate, and support a rotation‑based team in a fast‑moving environment.
