A high school diploma or its equivalent and one (1) year of experience in environmental protection, regulation, or health; one of the physical or natural sciences; agriculture; or engineering; or

A high school diploma or its equivalent and six (6) months of experience as an Environmental Specialist I or higher with the State of Florida; or

A bachelor's degree (4 years) from an accredited college or university.

Graduates utilizing education attained in the United States to meet the minimum requirements of a position will not be appointed until verification of the applicable degree has been obtained. Foreign trained graduates utilizing a degree attained outside of the United States to meet the minimum requirements of a position must be prepared to provide a copy of a credential evaluation conducted by an approved credential evaluation agency.

Requires possession of a valid Class E driver license.

Respirator certification.

Must obtain fruit fly certification within six months of appointment and maintain throughout employment in this position.

This position has regulatory responsibilities and is subject to the provisions of s. 112.313, Florida Statutes, and Section 60L-36.003, Florida Administrative Code.

Will be subject to the requirements of the proper use of appropriate respirator and/or self-contained breathing apparatus (SCBA) and must pass post-employment physical examinations to determine medical fitness for respirator and/or SCBA use.

Frequent travel, including overnight and sometimes up to two weeks at a time on an emergency program, is required.

General statement:
This is a professional position responsible for the protection of the health and value of agricultural resources and industries threatened by plant pests and disease within the state of Florida. This position conducts independent site inspections for the purpose of detecting, delimiting, sampling and the treatment or mitigation of introductions of invasive and economically important pests.

Surveys areas of high-risk for new infestations, identifies pathways and areas of high-risk and conducts appropriate regulatory and control actions to eradicate new pests from the environment. Conducts field diagnostic tasks using approved sampling methods and equipment to collect, prepare and submit insects, other arthropods, plants, and plant disease to the appropriate diagnostic laboratory for identification. Surveys will be conducted in agricultural, marinas, ports (sea and air), residential environs and businesses.
