This is semi-skilled work with full responsibility for the protection of City's owned underground utilities. The incumbent is responsible for locating and marking the exact location of all utilities, in a timely manner, including sewer mains, stormwater, streetlights, power lines, and other conduits to prevent damage during excavations and ensure compliance with State of Florida mandates.
The position protects all City utilities from being out of service due to damage or injury, prevents the cost of property damage to utility infrastructure, and involves extensive public contact with contractors, private utilities, and the general public.
Responsibilities- Full responsibility for protection of City's owned underground utilities.
- Locate and mark exact location of all utilities: sewer mains, stormwater, streetlights, power lines, conduits, etc.
- Prevent damage during excavations and ensure compliance with Florida State mandates.
- Protect utilities from being out of service due to damages, injury, and prevent cost of property damage.
- Extensive public contact with contractors, private utilities, and general public.
- Exercise initiative, decision-making, independent judgment under general direction of a supervisor.
- Use electronic pipe locator, measuring wheel/tape, engineering scale, marking paint applicator/flags, area maps/blueprints and location information equipment.
- Operate computer to review, track, and respond to Sunshine State One Call system.
- Accurately mark underground utilities using color coded system and report status within 48 hours.
- Field locate all utility lines at proposed construction sites.
- Maintain records of utility locates with time stamped photos and results.
- Schedule and conduct field site meetings with contractors, City departments, and other public agencies to clarify locate information or resolve conflicts with City owned utilities.
- Read plans, drawings, and as-builts for field location.
- Maintain locating equipment and supplies.
- Assist in tracking and mapping newly installed or revised City owned systems.
- Assist with utility shutdowns, emergency repairs, and other departmental field operations as needed.
- High school diploma or equivalent.
- Two (2) years experience in utility locating, construction, or related field preferred.
- Valid Florida Driver's License.
- Florida Stormwater Association Operator Level 1 Certificate or obtain within 120 days.
- Operation and Maintenance of Wastewater Collection System Certificate, California State University or obtain within 120 days.
- A comparable amount of training or experience may be substituted for the minimum education requirement.
