Testing Engineer

Corning is one of the world's leading innovators in glass, ceramic, and materials science. From the depths of the ocean to the farthest reaches of space, our technologies push the boundaries of what's possible. At Corning, there are endless possibilities for making an impact. You can help connect the unconnected, drive the future of automobiles, transform at-home entertainment, and ensure the delivery of lifesaving medicines.

And so much more.

Come break through with us. Corning's Environmental Technologies segment manufactures ceramic substrates and filter products for emissions control in mobile and stationary applications around the world.

Scope of the Role

The Testing Engineer is responsible for executing test programs that combine hands-on experimentation across a wide range of testing applications and environments, and rigorous data analysis. The role spans the full testing lifecycle - from planning and instrumentation setup through execution, data analysis, and results communication - while ensuring the readiness, calibration, and reliable operation of the test laboratory and supporting equipment.

The engineer will also design and integrate new measurement methods and instrumentation, including the associated calibration and system validation work, and will collaborate with development, engineering, and commercial teams to deliver test results that directly inform product and system design decisions.

Key Responsibilities
  • Customer Interaction:
Understand internal and external customer requirements and develop design proposals using Corning products.
  • Test Planning & Development:
Stay current with relevant industry standards, regulations, and measurement requirements. Develop and execute product and system evaluation tests, define testing approaches, and generate tools, processes, and test sequences to repeatedly measure key product characteristics.
  • Test Infrastructure:
Take ownership of the overall condition, readiness, and functionality of the testing laboratory environment. Maintain, troubleshoot, and calibrate complex testing instruments to ensure reliable, repeatable results, and support safe work practices throughout lab and field operations.
  • Test Execution:
Operate project-specific test equipment. Execute in-lab or real-world, in-field testing programs. Troubleshoot testing and infrastructure issues in real time and provide prompt feedback to steer projects in the right direction.
  • Data Analysis:
Analyze raw test data and product characterization results, ensuring data integrity and consistency. Verify observations against first principles and physical models, make critical observations that inform project direction, and summarize findings in clear reports and presentations for internal and customer audiences.
  • Work Schedule and Travel:
Travel up to 20–25%, for 1–2 weeks at a time, mostly across North America. Flexibility to work occasionally early mornings, nights, and weekends when testing schedules require.
Required Skills and Education

Bachelors degree in Mechanical Engineering, Chemical Engineering, Materials Science, or a related engineering discipline. 2–3+ years of experience in experimental testing, and data analysis. Ability to operate, maintain, troubleshoot, and calibrate complex technical instruments and diagnostic/testing equipment. Rigorous approach to experimental planning, execution, and data analysis. Proficiency in data analysis and management, with experience using Excel and advanced analysis tools (e.g., MATLAB, JMP, Tableau).

Excellent communication skills, including comfort interfacing with third-party vendors and customers. Self-motivated and comfortable taking ownership of equipment and testing operations with minimal supervision.

Desired Skills

Hands-on experience with designing and conducting experiments, and instrumentation handling (operation, calibration, troubleshooting, optimization). Good understanding of thermal and chemical engineering fundamentals (fluid flow/hydrodynamics, thermodynamics, heat transfer, kinetics, reactions, or mechanics of materials), will consider internship project experience. Master's degree of PHD degree is a plus with…
