** Role Purpose*
* The Research Scientist, Electron Microscopy supports Corning's characterization team by generating the microstructural and compositional insights needed to solve complex materials problems and enable innovation across Corning's technologies. This role is primarily focused on TEM/STEM characterization, FIB-based specimen preparation, and EPMA-based compositional analysis as part of a broader microanalysis capability. The position works across a broad range of materials and applications, including glasses, ceramics, semiconductors, polymers, biomaterials, thin films, nanoparticles, and nanoscale systems and devices, contributing to materials development, process understanding, and failure analysis.
This role is best suited for someone with strong hands-on microscopy skills, sound scientific judgment, and a collaborative approach to solving challenging materials questions in a fast-paced research environment.
** Key Responsibilities*
* - Perform advanced TEM/STEM characterization, including use of analytical microscopes with EELS and EDS capabilities
- Prepare high-quality TEM specimens using FIB
- Conduct and support EPMA analysis for compositional characterization, data interpretation, and technical problem-solving
- Collaborate with researchers and characterization colleagues to design experiments, collect and analyze data, interpret results, and communicate findings to project teams and stakeholders
- Contribute to project planning and technical discussions by identifying and applying effective characterization strategies
- Develop and improve microscopy methods, sample preparation workflows, and analytical protocols for TEM and EPMA applications
- Present technical results clearly to internal customers and project teams
- Maintain safe laboratory practices and support routine instrument maintenance and upkeep
- Contribute to technical reports, documentation, and intellectual property activities as appropriate
** Experiences/Education - Required*
