The California Department of Transportation (Caltrans) is hiring a student assistant to work under the close supervision of Field Engineers. The role is a learning position, assisting with a wide variety of engineering work in office or field settings and helping to ensure contractors comply with contract documents.

• Assisting registered engineers with contract compliance, preparation of contract change orders, and evaluation of contractor activities.
• Reviewing daily inspection reports, as-built plans, and using computer-based processes to compile engineering data.
• Evaluating plans for design adequacy and ensuring compliance with plans and specifications.
• Reviewing quantity calculations, quantity sheets, and payment calculations prepared by Transportation Engineering Technicians and Engineers.
• Assisting in material testing, sampling intervals, documentation, and remedial actions for construction materials.
• Ensuring safety of State employees, contractor employees, and the traveling public by observing operations and traffic conditions and taking corrective action when necessary.
• Reviewing contractor operations for compliance with California OSHA regulations and providing guidance on appropriate assignments to civil service employees.

• Minimum cumulative GPA of 2.0.
• Completion of required units for undergraduate or graduate classification each term.
• Knowledge of physics, chemistry, and mathematics as applied to civil engineering and construction materials.
• Knowledge of contract administration procedures and practices.
• Strong communication skills (oral and written) with construction staff at all levels.
• Strong analytical and problem‑solving skills.

• Preference for qualified applicants up to 26 years of age who are or have been foster children, homeless youth, formerly incarcerated youth, or victims of human trafficking.

• College student attending classes during the regular term at an accredited institution on our affiliation list.
• Enrollment in at least six-semester units (nine quarter units) for undergraduates or four-semester units (six quarter units) for graduates.
• Major declared must match the major(s) listed in the job posting.

This part‑time, temporary, non‑benefited student position is subject to mutual consent between University Enterprises, Inc. and the employee. The employment is at will and may be terminated by either party at any time. A pre‑employment background check is required. The employee must reside in California and perform all work within the state.

Flexible workdays and hours, Monday – Friday, 8:00 AM – 5:00 PM. Employees may work up to 24 hours per week during the academic year and up to 40 hours per week during breaks.

Extended sitting, frequent standing, walking, manual dexterity, normal hearing and vision, use of office equipment, and ability to perform occasional bending, stooping, kneeling, or climbing.

Work may be performed in an office or in a field environment, including outdoor work under variable weather conditions and uneven terrain.
