Purpose and Scope:

The Safety Specialist is an exempt, non-supervisory safety professional responsible for independently evaluating workplace and jobsite safety conditions, applying established regulatory and Company standards, and recommending appropriate corrective actions. The role conducts field audits, incident investigations, safety training, and compliance reviews; advises operational leaders on hazard mitigation; and supports implementation of safety programs across assigned operations. The Safety Specialist exercises discretion and independent judgment in assessing risk, determining appropriate responses within established authority, and escalating significant safety matters to the Safety Supervisor or other leadership as appropriate.

Responsibilities:

Site / Field Safety

  • Independently conducts periodic jobsite, facility, equipment, and work-practice inspections to identify hazards, evaluate risk, and determine appropriate corrective or preventive actions within established Company and regulatory requirements.
  • Interprets and applies applicable OSHA, state, federal, local, and Company safety requirements to assigned operations and advises managers and employees regarding practical compliance measures.
  • Exercises stop-work commitment, consistent with Company policy, when an imminent or serious safety hazard is identified, and coordinates appropriate escalation and corrective action.
  • Conducts incident, injury, near-miss, and unsafe-condition investigations; performs root-cause analysis; identifies contributing factors; and develops recommendations for remedial and preventive action.
  • Analyzes accident and safety data to identify trends, recurring hazards, and key problem areas and communicates findings and recommendations to site and department leadership.
  • Reviews job hazard analyses, project safety plans, subcontractor safety documentation, and related materials; identifies deficiencies and recommends corrections or escalation before or during work.
  • Participates in pre-job, pre-bid, and project planning activities to identify foreseeable safety risks and recommend controls before work begins.
  • Companies OSHA or other regulatory representatives during site visits as assigned and documents observations, requests, and follow-up items.
  • Develops, delivers, and evaluates safety training, orientations, toolbox talks, and periodic emergency drills based on operational needs and identified risk trends.
  • Provides safety guidance to Project Managers, field leaders, and employees regarding jobsite hazards, safe equipment operation, PPE, work practices, and use of materials or substances.
  • Partners with Operations, HR, Fleet, and other stakeholders to support injury prevention, return-to-work coordination, driver safety, and other risk-reduction initiatives.
  • Assists with workers compensation investigations and claim documentation by gathering facts, preserving relevant information, and providing safety-related findings to appropriate internal and external partners.
  • Responds to safety-related incidents and emergency situations within assigned authority and recommends appropriate interim and long-term controls.

Compliance & Program Support

  • Maintains current knowledge of applicable occupational safety and health regulations and evaluates how regulatory or operational changes may affect assigned Company activities.
  • Participates in the development, implementation, and continuous improvement of hazard-control methods, safety procedures, training materials, and safety programs.
  • Supports implementation and adherence to the Company Injury and Illness Prevention Plan and other applicable occupational safety and health programs.
  • Reviews and maintains required safety records and reports, including OSHA logs and related documentation, and identifies data gaps or compliance concerns requiring follow-up.
  • Supports subcontractor prequalification and project-specific safety programs by evaluating safety documentation and communicating findings and recommendations to department leadership.
  • Supports hazardous-materials compliance, OCIP requirements, driver safety initiatives, and other assigned safety programs in coordination with the Safety Supervisor and applicable stakeholders.
