Position Summary

The Pipelayer is responsible for installing underground utilities including water, sewer, storm drain, manholes, catch basins, services, and related structures. This position performs skilled work to ensure utilities are installed at the correct line, grade, and specifications. The Pipelayer works closely with equipment operators and laborers to support safe, efficient Mainline production while meeting BPC’s quality and safety standards.

Essential Job Functions
  • Install pipe including water, sewer, storm drain, and related underground utilities.
  • Set proper line and grade using pipe lasers, measuring tools, and cut sheets.
  • Install manholes, catch basins, inlets, junction structures, and precast components.
  • Place and compact pipe zone bedding, backfill, and embedment material.
  • Ensure proper pipe jointing, alignment, spacing, and slope according to plans and standards.
  • Assist in assembling and installing valves, fittings, laterals, and service connections.
  • Work safely inside and around trenches in compliance with trench safety and shoring requirements.
  • Communicate with operators, laborers, and Foremen regarding production, safety, and installation needs.
  • Verify material types, joint types, and pipe specifications prior to installation.
  • Assist with layout, measuring, grade checks, and reading plans and cut sheets.
  • Ensure jobsite housekeeping, proper material staging, and safe access in pipe zones.
  • Identify utility conflicts or obstructions and notify Foreman for direction.
  • Support the setup and breakdown of trench boxes, shoring, ladders, and dewatering equipment.
  • Use hand tools, lasers, levels, and power tools in a safe and effective manner.
  • Maintain awareness of equipment movement and maintain safe distances while working near heavy machinery.
  • Mentor less experienced crew members as needed.
  • Performs other related duties as required or assigned. Responsibilities may be modified or added based on operational needs and business priorities.
Qualifications Education
  • High school diploma or GED preferred but not required
Experience
  • 3–5 years of pipe laying or underground utility installation required.
  • Experience with water, sewer, and storm drain installation in Mainline operations strongly preferred.
Licenses/Certifications (if applicable)
  • Competent Person and Trench Safety certifications preferred.
Skills
  • Ability to install pipe accurately to line and grade.
  • Ability to read and interpret plans, profiles, and cut sheets.
  • Strong understanding of trench safety and pipe installation standards.
  • Ability to communicate effectively with Foremen, Operators, Laborers, and inspectors.
  • Ability to use grade-checking tools, lasers, hand tools, and small power tools.
  • Strong awareness of jobsite hazards and ability to work safely around trenches and equipment.
  • Strong work ethic, reliability, and teamwork skills.
  • Ability to maintain confidentiality of company and project information.
Physical Demands and Work Environment

Physical Requirements:

This position involves medium to heavy physical work typical of construction field environments. Employees are regularly required to stand, walk, climb, balance, stoop, kneel, crouch, and crawl on uneven or rough terrain for extended periods. Manual handling of tools, materials, and equipment is a routine part of the job.

Employees must frequently lift, carry, push, or pull materials and objects weighing up to 50 pounds safely, and may occasionally lift or move materials up to 100 pounds with the assistance of another employee or through mechanical means such as hoists, forklifts, or other lifting equipment. Proper lifting techniques, team lifting, and mechanical aids should be used whenever possible to prevent strain or injury.

Employees must also use their hands and arms to handle, reach, and operate hand tools, power tools, and heavy equipment safely and efficiently.
