Position Summary

The Mainline Foreman is responsible for leading and supervising Mainline crews performing trenching, excavation, pipe installation, backfill, grading, and related underground utility work. This role ensures daily production goals, safety requirements, and quality standards are met across all Mainline operations. The Mainline Foreman directs equipment operators, pipelayers, and laborers, coordinates workflow, interprets plans and profiles, and ensures all work aligns with project specifications, BPC standards, and municipal requirements.

Job Functions
  • Lead and supervise Mainline crews performing trenching, excavation, pipe installation, backfill, compaction, and grading.
  • Review daily scope, production goals, sequencing, and safety expectations with the Superintendent.
  • Interpret and communicate plans, profiles, cut sheets, and utility drawings to crew members.
  • Coordinate equipment, manpower, and materials to meet daily production targets.
  • Ensure trench safety compliance including shoring, shielding, benching, and Competent Person requirements.
  • Oversee installation of underground utilities including water, sewer, storm drain, and related systems as assigned.
  • Direct operators during trenching, backfill, compaction, and grading operations.
  • Verify proper bedding, compaction, pipe alignment, and installation per project specifications.
  • Monitor jobsite conditions, hazards, access/egress, and ensure safe work zones are maintained.
  • Conduct daily tailgate meetings, enforce PPE use, and maintain BPC safety standards.
  • Coordinate with inspectors, utility agencies, and customers as needed during installations and inspections.
  • Maintain accurate daily reports, timesheets, material tracking, and production documentation.
  • Identify issues, conflicts, and utility crossings; notify Superintendent for direction and resolution.
  • Ensure proper cleanup, housekeeping, and preparation for next-day operations.
  • Mentor pipelayers, operators, and laborers to support skill development and field readiness.
  • Support mobilization and demobilization of equipment, materials, and jobsite setup.
  • Performs other related duties as required or assigned. Responsibilities may be modified or added based on operational needs and business priorities.
Qualifications

Education:
  • High school diploma or GED required.
Experience:
  • 3–5 years of Mainline or underground utility experience required.
  • 2+ years of leadership experience as a Lead Pipelayer, Operator, or Assistant Foreman preferred.
  • Experience with trenching, pipe installation, grading, and backfill in Mainline environments strongly preferred.
Licenses/Certifications (if applicable):
  • OSHA 30 required (or must obtain after hire).
  • Competent Person, Trench Safety, Confined Space preferred.
  • First Aid/CPR preferred.
Skills:
  • Ability to lead Mainline crews safely and effectively.
  • Ability to read and interpret plans, profiles, cut sheets, and project specifications.
  • Strong understanding of trench safety requirements and equipment operations.
  • Strong communication skills with Superintendents, inspectors, and field crews.
  • Ability to prioritize tasks, coordinate crews, and manage production efficiently.
  • Ability to identify hazards and enforce safety standards.
  • Strong teamwork, leadership, and problem-solving skills.
  • Ability to maintain confidentiality of company and project information.
Physical Demands and Work Environment

Physical Requirements:

This position involves medium to heavy physical work typical of construction field environments. Employees are regularly required to stand, walk, climb, balance, stoop, kneel, crouch, and crawl on uneven or rough terrain for extended periods. Manual handling of tools, materials, and equipment is a routine part of the job.

Employees must frequently lift, carry, push, or pull materials and objects weighing up to 50 pounds safely, and may occasionally lift or move materials up to 100 pounds with the assistance of another employee or through mechanical means such as hoists, forklifts, or other lifting equipment. Proper lifting techniques, team lifting, and mechanical aids should be used whenever possible to prevent strain or injury.
