Position: Maintenance Worker II (Temporary/Seasonal) - Recreation & Golf Services

Overview

City of Coronado is accepting applications for Maintenance Worker II (Temporary/Seasonal) in the Recreation and Golf Services Department. This is a temporary, non‑benefited position (not to exceed 1,000 hours in a fiscal year). The ideal schedule is Monday, Wednesday, and Friday, 4:30 am to 10:30 am, with some flexibility after the start time. The position requires an early morning start and includes work in parks, beaches, golf courses, streets, and related facilities.

Job Functions
  • Perform semi‑skilled maintenance, construction and repair duties on City parks, beaches, golf courses, streets and facilities.
  • Operate a variety of heavy and light equipment, and hand and small power tools, ensuring all equipment is operated safely and efficiently.
  • Maintain records of time spent on various maintenance functions; assist in preparing records and files.
  • Respond to public inquiries courteously; provide information and resolve complaints promptly.
  • Perform a variety of maintenance and repair activities for City parks and landscaped areas, including grounds maintenance, aeration, over seeding, mowing, edging, pruning, and raking.
  • Perform routine groundskeeping functions; pick up trash and debris; clean public restrooms; empty refuse containers.
  • Plant, water, cultivate, fertilize and care for shrubbery, lawns and trees; prepare soil for planting and transplanting; aerate soil and apply fertilizers.
  • Apply herbicides, fungicides and pesticides in compliance with City and health and safety regulations.
  • Assist in irrigation functions; adjust sprinkler heads; repair pipes; refer to higher‑level staff as required.
  • Maintains trees, removes stumps, cleans limbs and brush from signs, lights and overhead lines; rigs, lowers and stacks branches and limbs.
  • Maintains buildings and grounds, playgrounds, fitness equipment, picnic tables, gates, fences, and shade structures.
  • Performs beach maintenance, including operating beach loaders, sanitizers and dump trucks, building sand berms, and maintaining exits and walkways.
  • Maintains beach fire rings and recreational areas, sets up for special events.
  • Performs golf course maintenance: mowing fairways, greens, tees and roughs, raking and edging traps, weed abatement, and maintaining cart paths.
  • Maintains golf tee boxes and greens; changes cups, moves tee markers, and removes debris from sand traps.
  • Performs street maintenance duties: prepares surfaces for paving, patches potholes, mixes, spreads, shovels, rakes and rolls asphalt and chip seal surfaces.
  • Performs curb, gutter and driveway maintenance: breaks up surfaces, sets forms, mixes, pours, spreads and finishes concrete.
  • Paints traffic control markings and stencils on pavements and curbs; installs and maintains street signs; installs raised traffic bars and guardrails.
  • Provides traffic control in assigned maintenance areas; places cones, barriers and signs to protect the public; excavates and fills trenches and ditches.
  • Maintains pumps, circuit breakers, relays, water lines and TV camera inspection equipment.
  • Repairs machinery related to municipal swimming pools and related equipment.
  • Inspects, maintains and repairs pipes made of clay, galvanized steel, plastic, fiberglass etc.
  • Operates a vactor, sewer rodder, forklift and backhoe; performs confined‑space entry duties as required.
  • Performs building trade duties: carpentry, plumbing, heating, cooling, painting, furniture moving, roof repair and minor electrical work.
  • Performs general maintenance inside and outside buildings: patches roofs, replaces tiles, paints, installs door locks and doors.
  • Repairs plumbing fixtures and fittings.
  • Performs minor electrical repairs.
  • Removes graffiti and repaints surfaces as required.
  • Sets up, takes down and maintains hospitality equipment.
  • Performs routine inspection and maintenance of computerized swimming pool systems.
  • Participates in rotational shifts, including weekends and standby/on‑call shifts.
  • Performs related duties and responsibilities as required.
  • Qualifications Experience

    Maintenance Worker I: at least one year of maintenance and repair experience is desirable. Maintenance Worker II: at least two years in the assigned program area.
