Rough Carpenter

Overview

The rough carpenter constructs and repairs structural woodworks and equipment, working from blueprints, drawings, or oral instructions for highway, roads, and bridges.

• Measure materials or distances using square, measuring tape, or rule to lay out work
• Study blueprints and diagrams to determine dimensions of structure or form to be constructed
• Cut or saw boards, timbers, or plywood to required size, using handsaw, and power saw or woodworking machines
• Mark cutting lines on materials, using pencil and scriber
• Anchor and brace forms and other structures in place, using nails, bolts, anchor rods, steel cables, planks, wedges, and timbers
• Ensure compliance of all safety procedures and policies while promoting company’s safety culture
• Perform other duties as requested, directed, or assigned

• High School Diploma or GED required
• At least 2 years’ experience in highway, bridge, sewer, and road construction

• Knowledge of materials, methods, and the tools involved in the construction or repair of structures for highways, bridges, sewers, and roads
• Knowledge of arithmetic, geometry, etc.
• Knowledge of machines, tools, designs, uses, repair, and maintenance
• Excellent verbal and written communication skills
• Exercise discretion and independent judgement when handling day to day information
• Excellent time-management skills to plan, organize, and prioritize tasks and responsibilities to meet deadlines and adjust to changing priorities
• Ability to work cooperatively across all levels delivering on commitments – results oriented
• Ability to complete work with a high degree of accuracy and attention to detail
• Ability to work under pressure to meet department targets and deadlines
• Ability to work non-routine hours, when necessary
• Ability and willingness to travel as required

• Ability to work outdoors, exposed to heat and humidity, cold and rain, and around heavy traffic areas
• Moving about to accomplish tasks or moving from one worksite to another
• Ability to operate job related tools
• Constantly perform repeating motions that may include feet, leg, wrists, hands and/or fingers
• Work that includes moving and/or lifting objects up to 50 pounds, carry at least 30 pounds and up to 150 pounds with help
• Ability to frequently walk on uneven surfaces, including natural ground in varying weather conditions
