Purpose:
Provide students with appropriate learning activities, instruction, and supervision by implementing the lesson plans as directed by the absent teacher, principal, or other responsible staff.
Qualifications:
Education/Certification:
High school diploma/GED, some college hours, or associate degree
Special Knowledge/
Skills:
Knowledge of core academic subject assigned
Knowledge of curriculum and instruction
Ability to instruct students and manage their behavior
Strong organizational, communication, and interpersonal skills
Experience:
Experience managing groups of students and providing instruction, or related work experience.
Employment/Orientation/Professional Requirements:
* All subs are employed on an at-will basis and are not considered contractual employees. They are not employed for any specific length of time and have no property right in the employment. Subs do not have Chapter 21 rights. Employers may terminate at-will employees at any time for any reason or for no reason, except for legally impermissible reasons. As an at-will employee you are free to resign at any time for any reason or for no reason.
* Subs are also not guaranteed work at any specific campus, grade level, or other location. The district has the right to deny access to specific grades, teachers, campuses, or locations.
* Effectiveness as a substitute is directly related to ability in managing students, carrying out teacher plans, and working cooperatively with others. If there are any unfavorable incidents or reports regarding substitutes that need to be addressed, the appropriate District personnel may look into the matter and determine the appropriate action.
* Completion of the Calallen ISD Substitute Teacher Orientation and any additional Professional Development is required.
* Maintain prompt and regular attendance for each substitute assignment.
* Keep abreast and acknowledge all information located in District Policies and Employee Handbook updated each year.
* Substitutes must help/observe students.
* Perform other related duties as assigned by program/building administrator(s) in accordance with school policies and practices.
* Substitute employees are required to be consistently available to cover teacher absences at various campuses; a minimum of four (4) days per month within a school year to remain active in the substitute pool.
* Substitute employees must be available to accept assignments immediately upon hire into the Calallen ISD Substitute pool.
* Communicate in a friendly and positive manner towards students, parents, staff, and administrators.
* Abide by the approved dress standards in accordance with the Employee Handbook and substitute orientation training.
Student Growth and Development:
* Be a positive role model for students; support mission of campus and school district.
* Classroom Management and Organization.
* Submit attendance reports.
* Implement a classroom environment conducive to learning and appropriate for the physical, social, and emotional development of students.
* Manage student behavior in accordance with the lesson plans, Student Code of Conduct, and student handbook.
* Supervise students at all times.
* Take all necessary and reasonable precautions to protect students, equipment, materials, and facilities.
* Maintain a clean and orderly classroom and follow the classroom and school procedures as directed by the school.
* Leave notes or complete the approved substitute teacher report form at the end of the teaching day.
* Report any accidents or incidents.
Instructional Strategies:
* Implement lesson plans and instructional activities provided by the absent teacher or designated staff.
* Use appropriate instructional and learning strategies, activities, materials, equipment, and technology that reflect understanding of the learning styles and needs of students assigned and present subject matter according to the lesson plans.
* Work cooperatively with teachers to modify curriculum for students as needed or noted in lesson plans.
* Maintain confidentiality regarding special instructions for students. Special instructions should be carried out. Refer to an administrator regarding questions with special instructions. This should be in conference on an "as needed" basis and will require an educational need to know.
* Consult as appropriate with the campus principal or designee, if no lesson plan is provided by the teacher of record.
Classroom Management and Organization:
* Establish and maintain efficient classroom management procedures and standards of student behavior.
* Establish and maintain open lines of communication with students.
* Create an environment conducive to learning and appropriate for the maturity level, interest, and needs of students.
* Leave a summary of work completed at the end of each instructional day for the teacher of record.
