PURPOSE

The Career Counselor supports the mission of the Career and Professional Development Center at Texas A&M University–Corpus Christi by providing individualized and group career guidance, facilitating workshops and classroom presentations, and collaborating with faculty, staff, and employers to help students explore majors, develop career readiness competencies, and secure internships and/or employment. This position is responsible for helping students clarify academic and career goals, prepare effective job/internship search materials, and build confidence in navigating career decisions.

The Career Counselor also supports center-wide programming and data reporting efforts to track student engagement and career outcomes.

DESCRIPTION

Functional Area

1:
Career Guidance & Student Support (35%)
  • Provide one-on-one and group career guidance on topics including: major exploration, resume/cover letter writing, job/internship searches, interview preparation, and graduate/professional school planning.
  • Work closely with an assigned special population, identifying unique concerns for this population and providing services for these students.
  • Utilize career and database tools to take session notes and track student engagement.
  • Administer evidence-based career assessments to assist with choice of major and career exploration.
  • Help students reflect on their academic career and articulate their experiences to their prospective audience.

2:
College & Campus Collaboration (20%)
  • Collaborate with faculty, student organizations, departments, and academic advisors to address the needs of each unique entity or program.
  • Coordinate with academic colleges, departments, student organizations, faculty, and staff to increase student engagement on career development programming and events.
  • Represent the Career Center at campus-wide events such as orientations, tabling, and student organization meetings.
  • Serve on committees to build relationships across campus and broaden resources that may support career center initiatives.
  • Research local and national employment trends especially related to assigned college(s) and population to inform presentation content.

Workshop Facilitation & Programming (20%)
  • Design and deliver engaging workshops, presentations, and panel discussions on a wide range of career readiness topics.
  • Coordinate or assist with career programs and events, such as the fashion show, employer panels, internship events, and job readiness initiatives.
  • Participate in the Career Corner and mentor/guide Career Peers in their delivery of career development services.

4:
Event Support & Employer Engagement (15%)
  • Collaborate with the Employer Relations Team to support programming that develops partnerships with employers: on-campus recruiting, career fairs, classroom visits, site visits, special events, etc.
  • Create and maintain career development resources including web content, learning modules, and videos.
  • Communicate and promote career and internship opportunities as well as career readiness programs and upcoming events, as needed.

Administrative Support & Data Reporting (10%)
  • Track sessions, workshop attendance, and student engagement in career center management platform.
  • Assist with collection of first-destination data and support department-wide assessment and reporting efforts.
  • Participate in strategic planning and departmental meetings to contribute to continuous improvement.
  • Ability to multitask, manage time, and work cooperatively with others while maintaining a professional demeanor.
  • Work some nights and weekends and occasionally travel, for professional development and events.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.
