Position Summary Information

Job Description Summary

The purpose of this position is to provide advising, intervention and transfer information to Engineering declared majors. The advisor collaborates with the College’s Outreach and Recruitment Department to provide STEM information to prospective students and works closely with the Department Chair and Engineering faculty.

The advisor assists students in overcoming challenges to their educational goals in Engineering by conducting intervention and advising of at‑risk and academically unprepared students; identifying college and community resources; providing information on available financial aid; tutoring and supplemental instruction (SI) assistance; facilitating problem resolutions between faculty and students; assisting with class registration; and providing transfer information to four‑year institutions.

This position also supports the Academic Dean and Department Chair to identify needs for transfer and articulation agreements with four‑year institutions and assist with reverse transcripts from four‑year institutions, and performs other duties as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications
  • Bachelor’s degree in Engineering, Mathematics, Physics, Chemistry, or a related field.
  • One (1) year of related experience.
Required Job Knowledge, Skills, Abilities
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Word, Excel, and PowerPoint.
  • Strong organizational, management, and interpersonal skills.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
  • Ability to conduct student‑oriented workshops.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Master’s degree in a related field.
  • Experience in a higher‑education environment.
  • Student outreach experience.
  • Knowledge of the College’s core curriculum catalog.
  • Knowledge of the Texas Higher Education Assessment Standards and the Texas Common Course Numbering System.
  • Understanding of the College’s admission, financial aid, Engineering department requirements, and academic support services.

Job Duties
  • Provide academic advice for students by meeting with them to explain and evaluate test scores; introduce them to college resources; distribute essential materials; explain the roles of faculty advisors, degree plans, certificate programs, and registration procedures; make referrals to other offices, personnel, or institutions; define and explain terminology; and advise and register students during early, regular, and late registration.
  • Compile data of advising activities by maintaining service records, recording telephone inquiries, and providing monthly reports.
  • Participate in departmental assignments, committee work, and student support systems by coordinating special events and projects; participate in organizations and committees emphasizing student success, scholarships, and empowerment; and interact with other employees and the community.
  • Present workshops by preparing and presenting information for students on study skills; prepare and present or arrange for a speaker to provide training.
  • Perform other duties as assigned by the Dean and/or Chair.
