The Classroom Teacher (Teacher of the Deaf & Hard of Hearing) provides instructional services to eligible students according to the needs of the students. The primary responsibility of the teacher is to plan and implement an individualized instructional program designed to improve each student's ability to communicate including speech/language development, and auditory skills development.
Reports To:
Coordinator for Regional Day School Program for the Deaf
Responsibilities:
- Plans with school and special education support staff in developing and implementing an Individualized Education Program (IEP) with identifiable steps designed to improve the students' total performance.
- Identifies the learning styles of students to make the appropriate modifications in curriculum and teaching strategies.
- Cooperatively plans and presents information to other staff members concerning the learning styles of students.
- Writes daily lesson plans for each student in accordance with the student's prescribed needs.
- Reviews and updates the IEP for each student as required by the Texas Education Agency (TEA).
- Communicates using sign language when appropriate.
- Reports students' progress to administrators, parent(s)/guardian(s), and other staff members when needed.
- Evaluates, selects, develops, and/or adopts materials to meet the specific needs of students.
- Attends regularly scheduled special staff Admission, Review, and Dismissal (ARD) meetings and required in-service programs.
- Maintains a professional, knowledgeable relationship with school district support staff, students, and parents.
- Performs other job-related duties assigned by the Coordinator for Regional Day School Program for the Deaf and campus principal.
- Ability to communicate effectively (verbal, written, and/or in ASL)
- Maintain emotional control under stress
- Challenging situations and light lifting
