This position, under general supervision, advises students concerning the academic requirements for their chosen program and reports directly to the Senior Academic Advisor. The role assists students with course selection, registration process, and major selection; provides information on and refers students to university resources; communicates accurate and timely information; interprets institutional, core, and major requirements; and may supervise projects.
ResponsibilitiesAcademic Advising (60%) – Provides academic advising grounded in the tenets of practice outlined by the National Association of Academic Advising (NACADA) and appropriate academic advising and student development theories. Advises on course selection, registration, academic planning, career and educational goal-setting, appropriate resources, transition to the university, and retention issues. Documents student advising outcomes to meet department and institutional guidelines. Advises in both group and individual settings with current and prospective students.
Student Success & Retention (20%) – Advocates for student needs, clearly communicates information and interprets institutional and major requirements. Exhibits strong listening skills, helps students develop realistic self-perception and goals, monitors academic progress, implements intervention strategies, directs students to campus resources, maintains accurate student file documentation, and participates in recruiting activities, orientations, and workshops.
Collaboration / Advising Support (15%) – Collaborates with the campus community in student retention initiatives, serves on committees, conducts research and professional development activities, mentors other advisors, and provides technical support for the advising appointment scheduling system.
Reporting & Other (5%) – May provide reports and data analysis of advising initiatives and special populations; performs other duties as assigned.
Qualifications- Bachelor’s degree.
- Two (2) years of experience advising students in higher education or related experience.
- Intermediate skills in Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook), databases, and spreadsheets.
- Strong active listening, written, and verbal communication skills.
- Ability to work as a team member and independently; demonstrated initiative and follow‑through; tact, diplomacy, and judgment.
- Detail‑oriented, multi‑tasking in a fast‑paced environment; willing to work beyond normal office hours including evenings and/or weekends.
- Proficiency with student information systems, degree planning, and degree audits.
- Proficient analytical, interpersonal, and organizational skills; ability to maintain confidentiality.
- Ability to attend national conferences (e.g., NACADA, TEXANN, Texas Success Conference) and implement best practices.
- Three (3) years of experience advising students in higher education.
- Experience with Banner, Argos, Starfish, and Degree Works.
