Works and relates positively with others. Communicates effectively in oral and written form, with both students and adults.

Function

The Secondary Special Education Chairperson provides leadership in implementing the special education instructional program by working closely with campus administration, special education team members and Office of Special Education staff.

Responsibilities

Special Education Chairperson:
Provides guidance with campus administrative staff in the development of the Campus Improvement Plan. Coordinates the internal monitoring of the Campus Improvement Plan for the special education program. Obtains, collates, and reports data regarding special education programs, including reports on enrollment, contact hours, and student/staff schedules as requested by the Office of Special Education. Determines which students require ARD Committee meetings and schedules the ARD meetings.

Coordinates teacher production of student Individualized Education Program (IEPs) and schedules teacher attendance ves as the special education representative at ARD meetings. Ensures that appropriate committee members are present, ensures that special education laws and policies governing special education programs and procedures are followed, completes the ARD document, (except for initial and self-contained ARDs) including appropriate IEPs and ARD minutes, and, distributes copies of the ARD/IEP document.

Disseminates special education information at the campus level. Conducts regularly scheduled special education team meetings. Works with the special education staff to assist teachers in improving teaching methods, strategies, and techniques, on request. Prepares special education bulletins and memorandums for campus use as needed. Performs other duties within the guidelines of special education directives as assigned. Attends district special education chairperson meetings.

Communicates individual school concerns and recommendations regarding instruction in meetings with the Office of Special Education staff.

Teacher Duties:
Plans for successful student learning of daily objectives that include basic knowledge and skills, and central concepts of the discipline. Ensures students are engaged and successful in learning, critical thinking and problem solving. Utilizes multiple models of instruction, assessment and effective teaching practices. Utilizes State TEKS and District Curriculum to design engaging lessons which are challenging, high quality and appropriate for the level of instruction.

Maintains current accurate records of daily attendance and textbooks issued. Able to effectively manage time and materials. Accepts related assignments as requested by principals.
