Function

The Special Education Behavior Intervention Specialist provides campus staff with alternatives to placing students with behavior problems in self-contained settings. The specialist works with the home campus to implement a successful behavior intervention plan and monitors the students' progress.

Responsibilities

Instructional Management Utilizes program outcomes (Health Care Plans, Individualized Education Program (IEP), Health Care Plans database) for corrective action, programmatic improvement, and recognition of success. Recommends appropriate placement of special education students for instructional purposed at the campuses and district levels. Recommends effective classroom strategies and techniques to improve instruction through collaborative efforts. School/Organizational Climate Promotes the use of positive discipline management plans to special education classrooms.

Recognizes/rewards student's accomplishments in a variety of ways. Assists the departmental level in the development, implementation, monitoring, and evaluation of special education policies and programs. School/Organizational Improvement Utilizes information systems to monitor special education students' progress as the basis for determining appropriate student placement and improved program design. Personnel Management Performance Serves as leader of special education staff development sessions.

Administration and Fiscal/Facilities Management Facilitates prompt and accurate reports from campus to special education office. Student Management Cooperates with principal, staff and parents(s)/guardian(s) in identifying and solving school and student issues. Assists teachers in developing classroom strategies and techniques for improving classroom management to meet individual student needs. Conducts conferences with parents(s) /guardian(s) and students. Works cooperatively with staff at the district level to explore more appropriate placements.

School Community Relations Promotes positive staff and community relations through effective dissemination. Communicates clearly the district's special education programs, goals, and new directions to parent(s)/guardian(s) and community to solicit their support. Responds to the concerns of the parent(s)/guardian(s) and the community in a timely manner. Professional Growth and Development Performs duties in a professional, ethical, and responsible manner. Participates in available employee development activities.

Uses information provided through evaluative feedback to improve performance. JUN Assumes responsibility for acquiring knowledge and skills necessary for fulfilling job duties and improving leadership skills. Performs additional duties as assigned by the supervisor.

Working Conditions

Ability to lift, push, pull up to 25 pounds Ability to receive information and/or instruction from internal/external customers through spoken expression. Ability to manipulate tools/equipment/keyboards. Ability to convey information and/or instruction to internal/external customers through spoken expression. Ability to perform work while standing and/or walking for extended periods, up to eight (8) hours a day. Ability to see detailed information, naturally or with correction.

Must have a valid Texas Driver's license. Ability to communicate effectively (verbal and written); ability to instruct; maintain emotional control under stress; regular district-wide travel; moderate carrying of paperwork; knowledge of the needs of disabled student of all ages; excellent interpersonal skills in dealing with district-wide staff and parent(s)/guardian(s); ability to provide in-service; and knowledge of regular education programs in order to facilitate inclusive activities.
