Position Summary Information

The purpose of this position is to provide advising, intervention, and transfer information to Liberal Arts majors. The Liberal Arts Advisor collaborates with the College’s Outreach and Recruitment Department to provide Liberal Arts information to prospective students and works closely with the Department Chair, the Liberal Arts Program Coordinator, and the Student Enrollment Center.

The Advisor assists students in overcoming challenges to their education goals in Liberal Arts by conducting intervention and advising at-risk and/or academically unprepared students; identifying college and community resources available to students; assisting students with information on available financial aid, tutoring, and supplemental instruction (SI) assistance; helping students with registering for classes; guiding students through the graduation process; and assisting students with transfer information to four year institutions.

This position provides a support service to the Academic Dean and Department Chair, identifying needs for transfer and/or articulation agreements with four year institutions and assisting with reverse transfer from four year institutions.

Minimum Qualifications

Bachelor’s degree in a Liberal Arts program or a related field.

One (1) year of related experience providing student services in higher education.

Required Job Knowledge, Skills, Abilities

Knowledgeable in advising traditional, non-traditional, developmental, and at-risk students in a higher education setting.

Skilled in use of database-related software, such as Etreive, Datatel/Colleague, and Civitas.

Ability to work independently and self-directed within changing deadlines.

Proficient with Microsoft Office and Adobe platforms.

Ability to work flexible hours which may include occasional evenings and/or weekends.

Excellent verbal and written communication skills.

Excellent organizational, managerial, and interpersonal skills.

Ability to conduct student oriented workshops.

Preferred Qualifications

Master’s degree in a related field.

Experience with student outreach.

Knowledge in interpreting the Texas core curriculum and the College’s catalog.

Experience utilizing Datatel/Colleague, Civitas, and Etrieve.

Understanding of the College’s general admissions requirements; financial aid requirements; department requirements; and academic support services.

Job Duties

Provide academic advising to students during early advising, regular, and late registration to ensure successful program completion, graduation, and transfer.

Advise students of appropriate placement and coursework and maintain regular contact with students.

Utilize available technology to monitor student academic progress toward degree/program completion and transfer.

Develop and maintain advising caseloads to ensure student engagement, progress, and success.

Participate in departmental assignments, committee work, and student support systems.

Maintain interdepartmental relationships with multiple academic areas and student services.

Perform other related duties as assigned by Dean and/or Department Chair.
