Overview

The Utilities Sr. Plant Operator is responsible for overseeing treatment operations at one of the six wastewater treatment plants operated by the city. Key responsibilities include maintaining proper system pressure, monitoring chlorine residuals, ensuring effective virus and bacteria removal or inactivation, managing chemical dosing, overseeing tank cycling, and safely handling hazardous chemicals. This position is also responsible for the operation and maintenance of plant equipment and systems.

The role is essential in reclaiming and returning treated water to the environment, as well as supplying reclaimed water to reuse customers, while ensuring compliance with all state and federal standards established by the Environmental Protection Agency and the Texas Commission on Environmental Quality.

Responsibilities

* Operate a wastewater treatment facility using advanced knowledge of conventional treatment processes while ensuring compliance with all state and federal regulations

* Perform advanced process control activities, including monitoring and adjusting chemical dosing, treatment flows, distribution pressures, and storage tank levels to meet operational demands and optimize treatment efficiency

* Analyze system trends and project demand changes to anticipate operational adjustments and maintain cost-effective treatment performance

* Serve as a team lead during shift operations, supervising Utility Technicians and coordinating planned repairs, flow rerouting, and startup/shutdown activities for plant equipment and processes

* Operate, monitor, and troubleshoot plant equipment and systems, including SCADA systems, valves, pumps, motors, disinfection equipment, chemical feed systems, and City vehicles

* Oversee the collection, preservation, storage, and analysis of wastewater samples and maintain records required for operational tracking and regulatory compliance

* Perform preventative maintenance, generate corrective maintenance work orders, and complete data entry within the City's computerized maintenance management system (CMMS)

* Handle and supervise the safe storage, usage, inventory, and application of hazardous chemicals, including maintenance and repair of chemical feed and chlorine delivery systems

* Assist with internal and external compliance reviews, audits, and investigations while maintaining accurate operational logs and documentation

* Ensure facilities and grounds are secure, clean, and properly maintained

* Perform other duties as assigned

Position Type and Typical Hours of Work

* Non-Exempt - Full-Time - 40-hour work week

* Must be available to work additional hours as needed

* Flexibility to work evenings, weekends, and holidays is a schedule requirement

* In the event of an emergency, employees are required to work to provide for the safety and well-being of the public, including the delivery and restoration of vital services

Minimum Qualifications

* High School Diploma/GED

* Seven (7) years of experience

* A valid driver's license is required; successful out-of-state candidates must be able to obtain a valid Texas driver's license within 90 days of hiring

* Class B Wastewater Operator License

Basis of Rating

A recruitment consultant will evaluate all applications against the posted qualifications. The city may also conduct additional skill assessment tests, in addition to the panel interview
